I met Pete at Dragon Con 2000 in Atlanta at the Sluggy dinner thingy he put on, and I gotta say he is one ultra cool dude.
Since Pete's never put a picture of himself on the website, I can report that he stands about 6' tall, has a slight beer belly, and has a widow's peak where his hair's receding.
Pete Abrams has done none of these, but still has done deeds that qualify him as a hero.

Pete Abrams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pete Abrams (born August 4, 1970) is the writer and illustrator of the online comic strip Sluggy Freelance.
Pete Abrams went to Joe Kubert School of Graphic Design but was unable to get a job in the comics industry after school.
It no longer conforms strictly to the newspaper model of a short fl and white strip on weekdays and a larger, full color Sunday edition.) Sluggy eventually became so successful that it is now his full time job, and he is reputed to be the first person to make a living at drawing webcomics.

A final note: Pete used to be a member of the list, but both he and the list were worried about legal troubles like Pete using (even accidentally) an idea for a strip posted by a list member.
Pete likes being part of the community, though, so he uses Shirt-Guy Tom as sort of a human filter -- which means, essentially, that Shirt-Guy Tom tells Pete anything important that's posted to the list, and Pete talks to the list through Shirt-Guy Tom.

By now, you all know what the big news is for me this month: Pete Abrams has given me the opportuntiy to take over the writing and drawing reins for Sluggy Freelance for the week of January 15th to January 21st.

Pete Abrams, the creator of Sluggy Freelance, has been stretching his artistic muscles a bit for the last two weeks.
Normally, Sluggy's format is the all-too-common "four panels with a punch line." That one shortcoming is made up for in numerous ways: the punch lines are often hilarious, the characters are all very well developed, and more important than anything else: the "environment" of the story is always changing.
On the 23rd, Pete borrowed Sandman's "Death" character, although what's going on there wasn't (or hasn't been yet) fully explained.
