Pete Ham was, for all intents and purposes, Badfinger.
Pete Ham was the guiding talent behind Badfinger, one of the great undersung cult artists of the 1970's, and his death by his own hand in 1975 was one of the saddest endings in the history of pop music.
Ham's skills as a pop songwriter have never been widely appreciated, and the unpolished 7 Park Avenue (the title refers to the address the band kept) will likely do little to change that (despite the overdubs, these are basically solo demos, and the music never approaches what the full band could achieve).

This second collection of previously unreleased home demos by Ham is almost as worthwhile and satisfying to the ear as its predecessor, 7 Park Avenue.
The cut to attract the most attention will be a demo of "Without You," although Ham's version is an incomplete skeleton of the track that Badfinger would record (and Nilsson would cover for a chart-topping hit), missing the chorus added by fellow Badfinger member Tom Evans.
On the whole, the effect of this CD, as was the case with 7 Park Avenue, is to make one wish that Badfinger had recorded more of Ham's material and had made less room for the songwriting efforts of the lesser composers in the band.

Dan Matovina's latest attempt to capture the essence and allure of the music of Peter William Ham proves to be as fruitful and charming as the original 1997 collection of Ham demo material on Rykodisc, 7 Park Avenue.
The shortness of tracks aside, it is a pleasure to hear Ham perform in ways you would not have expected and the material, as usual of Ham, does not disappoint.
Pete, in the downtrodden songs "I've Waited So Long to Be Free" and "Where Will You Be" manages to construct beautiful melodies for each.

John is not a part of Pete's estate, Pete's daughter, Petera, gets everything legally inherited, so I suggested I go to her lawyers, the Ham estate lawyers, who were in Swansea, and acknowledge these tapes existence, so I could offer to salvage them for the estate's future.
The Rykodisc Pete Ham page had the original artwork displayed for a week back in March 1997, I copied the cover and present it to the world for all to share, click on any picture to view a large comparison photo of both covers.
There is a lot of Pete material to choose from and I used things that probably would not have made it on to a Volume Two of Pete demos.

Ham is a thinking listener`s rock romantic, offering emotional, wistful words and melodies without sounding sappy.
Purists should be aware that, although Ham played most of the instruments here, some overdubs were added in the 1990s by other musicians, for the purpose of giving the tracks a fuller, more balanced sound.
It`s difficult to judge whether this decision was justified without hearing the original versions, though one wonders whether diehard Badfinger fans (the primary audience for this release) would really care that much about any sonic imperfections in the originals.

Luckily for us all Pete kept recording his passionate ideas all the while knowing most of these works in progress were never going to be recorded by Badfinger or make it to the general public.
The song order and flow has a more choppy feel than 7 Park Avenue mostly because some songs just are not complete (often just at the time you want them to keep going) and because the majority of songs are under 2 minutes with some under a minute.
In a conversation I had with Ron at the Madfinger show in Florida he spoke how nice it was to be involved again in another Pete Ham project and how at times it was almost eerie playing and listening to him again.

The first album was a conglomeration of songs from their earlier incarnation as The Iveys, songs written for "the Magic Christian" movie soundtrack, and assorted new material.This time around Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Mike Gibbins (often billed incorrectly as Gibbons), and a new member Joey Molland, would record an entire new LP as a unit.
