Handy and Weiss are excellent and continue to solo with ardor and poise showing a maturity well beyond their years.

For drummer Pete "LaRoca" Sims, time is a fluid thing, existing on many levels, both philosophical and musical.
When it comes to swing, Pete Sims is one of the all-time greats, a drummer whose incandescent beat and fiery rhythmic rejoinders pushed the envelope of collective interplay to the limit on many of the most cherished Blue Note releases of the late '50s and early '60s.
The verities of his dynamic interplay with the current edition of SWINGTIME (Jimmy Owens, trumpet, flugelhorn; Ricky Ford, tenor saxophone; Dave Liebman or Lance Bryant, soprano saxophone; George Cables piano; Santi Debriano, bass), are as fresh and resonant in 1997 as they were with Sonny Rollins in 1957.

The final three cuts are from a 1957 session with Clifford Jordan (tenor), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Pete La Roca (drums) and Paul Chambers again.
Clifford Jordan's singular tone is a similarly fine addition to the unit, and Pete La Roca would have been the first call drummer at any label that couldn't offer Art Blakey.
I won't even get started on Paul Chambers because this is a review, not a book, but he's everything you would expect here, and if you don't know what to expect, go out immediately and buy everything you see with his name on it.

Lloyd first encountered Eric Harland at a jam session in New York's Blue Note club in September 2001 recognizing immediately that he was hearing one of the great drummers.
Within a year Harland was playing with the saxophonist - the latest in a long line of superb Lloyd group drummers that, in addition to Higgins, has included Roy Haynes, Tony Williams, Pete La Roca, Paul Motian, Jack DeJohnette, Jon Christensen and Billy Hart.
Harland, who turns 30 in 2006, was first inspired to play jazz by the example of Elvin Jones on Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." He has since played with McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders and Ravi Coltrane, with Joshua Redman, Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis and many others.

The bop-oriented improvisations hold one's interest and make one wish that Scott had stayed in New York throughout the '60s; he had much more to say.

How is it that the sound of the cymbal "ride" patterns of great jazz drummers is so personal that it can be identified by an experienced listener in a matter of a few measures of listening?
What is it that identifies so clearly the playing of Kenny Clarke, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Pete La Roca, Larry Bunker, Donald Bailey, Bill Goodwin, Mel Lewis, Billy Higgins and other great jazz drummers with identifiable personal styles?
It has been recommended in the pages of the Jazz Educator's Journal, that student drummers ought to play strong accents on both the high hat and on the ride cymbal on the 2nd and 4th beats of every measure.
