 Pete Rock
Pete’s first solo project, Soul Survivor, was released during the fall of 1999 and gave a lot of headz what they had been looking for in a hip-hop CD – various star lyricists working over continuously hot beats.
Pete Rock, aka Peter Phillips, first exploded onto the music scene in the late eighties as a DJ on New York radio station WBLS’ show, “In Control with Marly Marl,” which aired every Friday and Saturday night.
Pete started that and was doing that way before any of these newer guys bit and caught on to that style.

Pete Rock :: Petestrumentals :: BBE Records
Pete Rock's signature sound has evolved a little since his first opus, "Mecca and the Soul Brother." While most of the other great producers from this time have either altered their musical selections significantly or fallen off the map, Pete Rock has stuck to his guns with alarming success.
Pete Rock is the true master of this, and "Petestrumentals" is his truest showing.
Pete's protégés, The UN, are guests on "Cake" and "Nothing Lesser." The production is more skeletal to make room for the voices, but both are excellent songs, and since they arrive at the end, they do not disrupt the flow of the instrumentals.

:: MVRemix Reviews: Pete Rock - Soul Survivor II ::
Pete Rock is undoubtedly one of the greatest producers ever, but with "Soul Survivor II" even the Chocolate Boy Wonder proves that following up a classic album the likes of the original "Soul Survivor" is a daunting task, even for him.
Similarly Pete is also able to duplicate a DJ Premier type vibe for Gangstarr affiliate Krumbsnatcha on the haunting street anthem of "Beef".
Overall Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor II" is a solid but highly inconsistent effort from the legendary producer.

Rock emerged in the early 90s as part of a duo with rapper C.L. Smooth, releasing two discs, both apparently considered to be legendary in the hip hop realm, before splitting in 1995.
At that point, Rock chose to work more as a producer, which given his obviously light mic skills, was probably a good idea.
He sounds outright intense, and leaves Rock in the dust, which is as much a knock on Rock as it is a compliment to Method Man.

Pete Rock :: Lost & Found - Underground Hip Hop Soul Classics :: BBE Music
Although Pete is considered by many the only worthy challenger to DJ Premier's throne as greatest (underground) producer, his list of production credits is notably short for an artist of his reverence, with only three full length LPs under his belt, and random outside production limited to a select few.
Well, there was no substantial work credited to Pete Rock for that four year period, until he hooked up with BBE and finally released two previously-shelved, full-length LPs: Center of Attention, with a pair of MCs known as InI, and The Original Baby Pa, with verbals provided by one-time Pete pupil Deda.
InI, Pete Rock's brother Grap Luva and Rob-O, is also symptomatic of a problem that has plagued Pete throughout the majority of his career: His production far outweighs the talents of the respective MC he's lacing.

Most importantly though, 1992 was the year when a young duo named Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth flooded the airwaves with their rousing jazz-laced elegy, "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)".
Featuring a remarkably agile and sincere vocal delivery from C.L. Smooth, and Pete Rock dropping haunting strands of interweaving horn melodies, stabbing sax blurts and a smooth snare-driven groove, "T.R.O.Y." would become one of the most stirring and beloved hip-hop songs of all time.
But while the instrumentals on Deda's The Original Baby Pa are similarly inspired to the ones found on Center of Attention, both albums showcase a problem that's plagued Pete Rock's career from day one: the quality of his beats consistently overshadows the quality of his emcees' rhymes.
