Shelley: A lot of people think that punk was something that happened a quarter of a century ago, but really, it’s something that can happen any time that somebody decides that they have just as much of a right to be an active participant in culture as a passive consumer.
Shelley: People do have the impression that the music industry has been going for thousands of years, you know, that nothing can be changed, but it’s only been sort of a hundred years since they first brought out the record player, the phonograph.
Shelley: I’ve always thought that even though the world is made up of the great political movements, that it’s really the personal political movements, the changes that happen to people and the way which they relate to others, which then affects the way the other things progress.

For a while, before the advent of the second wave of punk, they were also one of the faster bands out there, with frontman and guitarist Pete Shelley leading the band on with his rapid-fire three-chord changes and highly sardonic lyrics.
I don't know what he and his mates were watching on TV at the time of the interview, but it was apparently hilarious, as the entire conversation was interrupted with fits of Shelley giggling hysterically along with whoever was sitting on the couch next to him.
Pete: Actually, that was the reason why Shirley Winters changed her name to Shelley.

By stark contrast Pete Shelley - the guru of new wave pop - sports an ill-fitting patterned shirt - hanging loose over his paunch - with what seems to be exactly the same haircut he sported all those moons ago.
Perhaps more aware was the late Mancunian producer Martin Hannett who - according to Shelley - had worked out a scam where he could get some Buzzcocks records pressed on the back of some-thing he was doing for a group in Nigeria.
Pete Shelley: "It was meant to be very sponta-neous - like a snapshot of what happened at that time - It wasn't a career thing because it was some-thing that could have been over with tomorrow - It was just something to show your grandkids."

Shelley's first solo LP, Sky Yen, was actually recorded in 1974, long before the Buzzcocks, and demonstrates an early interest in Germanic electronic music.
Shelley seems to draw influence from a wide group of sources (such as the Doors and Marc Bolan), and the album cleverly sidesteps the trap of monotony that sometimes afflicted the Buzzcocks.

The miracle of Homosapien, ex-Buzzcock Pete Shelley's solo debut, is that this one-man show–recorded with the help of computerized synthesizers – sounds remarkably organic.
Shelley and producer Martin Rushent have discreetly disguised the mathematical precision of the rhythm machines and synthesizer arrangements with the meaty crunch of electric guitars and the liquid swirl of a slightly doctored twelve-string acoustic.
The cynical bite of "Just One of Those Affairs" is matched by its punchy boogie bravado (underlined, of course, by a pumping synthesizer bass line), while the computerlike accuracy of "Guess I Must Have Been in Love with Myself" heightens the nervous tension between Shelley's tortured vocal and the fragile wash of the acoustic guitars.
