Afonso V of Portugal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The count of Barcelos, a personal enemy of the duke of Coimbra (despite being half-brothers) eventually became the king's favourite uncle and began a constant struggle for power.
To secure his position as regent, in 1445 Pedro married his daughter, Isabel of Coimbra, princess of Portugal, to Afonso V. But in June 9, 1448, when the king came of age, Pedro had to surrender his power to Afonso V. The years of conspiracy by the duke of Braganza finally came to a head.
Afonso was a direct descendant of Edward III of England through his son John of Gaunt and therefore was a direct descendant of William the Conqueror, King of England.

 Welcome to MasonicPaedia.Org
The Duke of Bedford employed the authority of Parliament to reconcile the differences which had broke out between his brother and the Bishop of Winchester, and obliged these rivals to promise before that assembly, that they would bury all quarrels in oblivion.
The sovereign authority being vested in the Duke of Gloucester, as protector of the realm, the execution of the laws and all that related to the civil magistrate, centered in him: a fortunate circumstance for the masons at this critical juncture.
The Duke having always proved a strenuous friend to the public and by the authority of his birth and station, having hitherto prevented absolute power from being vested in the King's person, Winchester was enabled to gain many partisans, who were easily brought to concur in the ruin of the prince

[MapHist] Martin Behaim's Libra in Guinea
This meaning that the chief doctor and cosmographer in king John's times (the times of the invention of astronomical navigation in the Gulf of GuineaŠ) was the same man who had had that same job, in the previous generation, with Prince Peter of Coimbra...
(with Prince Peter, the Duke of Coimbra, markgraf of Treviso, and former Regent of the Portuguese Crown, murdered in 1449 in Alfarrobeira...).
Thank you to the MapHist discussion group for calling attention, week after week, in February-March 2002, to that strange positioning of Libra in the Gulf of Guinea, the heart of the 15th century Portuguese Discoveries and invention of astronomical navigation by latitude (through the measuring of the Sun's position).

I was extremely glad to get this opportunity and of course took the chance for a stop-over in Singapore for some anabantoid business under the guidance of Peter Ng at NUS who is doing some sterling ecological and taxonomic work in the region.
