Peter Bart to Mel: This is a stick up - Give us all your money or we'll wine about it and make you look bad.
Peter Bart editor of Variety Magazine and friend of Mel Gibson has written an open letter to Mel on behalf of the crew that worked on "The Passion of the Christ".
Ironically I just watched a video of Peter Bart interviewing Mel and talking about how Hollywood can be a backstabbing place that makes you wonder why someone would even want to live in the LA area.

Peter Bart Is Back At Variety, Is His Transgressions Forgiven? George Christy Is Gone, But He Hasn’t Forgotten.
Peter Bart is back at Variety, his transgressions forgiven — or at least unproven — and his mantle as the Conscience of Hollywood restored.
Bart was suspended by his bosses at Cahners Business Information, the publishers of Variety, three weeks ago when Los Angeles magazine published allegations that Bart made up quotes, made racially charged statements, and sold a script in violation of company policy.
While Bart’s suspension prompted a lively debate over journalistic principles, Christy’s case may be more instructive on the role of ethics in the entertainment press.

Bart: When my girlfriend and I were sitting at the Oscars and 'Crash' won, we both jumped up and applauded because we were delighted by that.
Bart: In the first place, I do not believe what the critic of the L.A. Times and other critics have said, namely that the fact that 'Brokeback' didn't win was any sort of reaction to gay subtext or anything like that.
Bart: I despair at what's happening as an effect of the whole celebrity culture and the way the media covers it because, for one thing, it's changing the nature of movie stars and what they are and how they live.

Amazon.com: The Gross: Books: Peter Bart   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Bart is a seasoned observer of the film industry both as studio executive (holding seats at Paramount and MGM/UA) and as the editor in chief of Variety and Daily Variety.
As Bart shows little interest in the quality of these films, however, his book seems written primarily for the executives pulling the strings (for instance, the box office failure of Godzilla is largely attributed to a backlash against the mega-prerelease hype and rushed release date rather than the generic substance of the film).
Peter Bart, editor of Variety, penned this sketch of the Hollywood summer season of 1998, and offers insight and background information both useful to the interested moviegoer/home critic, and to screeenwriting professionals looking for strategies to break the script-reader barrier.

LOS ANGELES - Peter Bart, longtime editor of the Hollywood trade paper Variety, has been suspended over comments he allegedly made in a magazine interview and allegations that he tried to sell scripts while he was editor of the paper.
Bart has denied the allegations and the accuracy of the quotes in the article, said Tad Smith, president of the media division of Cahners, the company that publishes the trade paper.
Bart's continuing membership implied that he had sold at least one script while he was Variety's editor, the Reporter article said.

Bart, editor-in-chief of Variety (PW's sister magazine) and former studio exec, smartly places 100 years of movies, plays, musicals and TV shows within their pop-culture context, while also illuminating their ongoing cultural effects.
Bart, Variety's editor in chief, offers a history of the movie business through the lens of the 100-year-old periodical.
Bart also examines television successes, including how MTV's The Real World launched the reality TV genre in 1992 and how CSI braved almost insurmountable behind-the-scenes troubles to become television's number-one drama.

Zap2it.com - Movie news - Maligned Variety Editor Peter Bart Returns to Tackle Terrorism
In his regular "Back Lot" column, published in Monday's Variety, Bart suggested that although last week's terrorist attacks have caused a knee-jerk reaction among entertainment executives to temporarily eliminate terrorism themes from film and TV, the idea that all violence or mayhem could be eradicated in the wake of this disaster is naive.
But Bart was also optimistic: "The mood of the moment may provide a rare opportunity to step back from this cultural blood lust and bring forth entertainment that might ennoble its audience rather than exploit it."
Regular readers of Bart's column might also pick up on some of his other comments which seem to carry a double meaning, perhaps even alluding to his own feelings on his own recent ordeal.

Bart's that I have found irritating over the years, is that this is a work of fiction but a lot of trouble seems to have been taken to avoid disclosing that.
Peter Bart is the editor of Variety, the major movie trade publication, so he is almost overqualified to write a book about the movie business.

SXSW: Conversation with Peter Bart - Cinematical
It was a frustrating panel; as much as Bart is known (and clearly likes to think of himself) as a "straight shooter", there were at least two incidences this morning where he seemed to directly contradict himself.
All throughout, Bart (not unrightfully) glorified his role in Hollywood's most exciting historical moment, but very early on, Bart warned us not to look for a repeat of the American New Wave which he and Robert Evans helped usher and mold.
To that, Lemire scrunched up her face and said, "Blogs scare me!" She and Bart then conferred for a while on the "unreliable" nature of blogs; by the time Lemire was shaking her head back and forth and increduously exclaiming, "Nobody is fact checking these things!", I lost the ability to keep my mouth shut.

Variety’s Peter Bart, whom I normally respect, dives his head completely into the sand today with this commentary on Hollywood’s box-office slump.
Bart’s message is essentially this: Hollywood has no problem, and the success of ‘The Passion’ last year should not color our perceptions of what’s gone wrong with the town.
Bart is deluding himself, of course, hoping against hope that the town he’s done so much to shape has not gone completely dysfunctional.

Tongue lashings the likes of which have never been heard before will make listeners laugh with glee as the power brokers and power elite of Hollywood get a kick in the rear from one who surely suffers from a severe case of sour grapes.
Bart's stance on an issue is always sharp and pithy, although his viewpoint waffles from essay to essay.
