Peter Binsfeld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This point of view can be considered as moderate, taking into account that other inquisitors had condemned to be burnt at the stake children between two and five years of age.
Contrarily to other authors of the same time, Binsfeld doubted that people could change shape into animals and of the validity of the diabolical mark.
Binsfeld also associated the seven deadly sins with seven demons, which he said induced people to commit that sin.

Witchcraft in Europe and America from Cornell University Library
The case of Dr. Dietrich Flade of Trier, confessed, convicted, and executed for witchcraft in 1589, is remarkable in a number of aspects.
Much of the concern generated by the notoriety of the Flade case focused on the problem of the testimony of convicted witches as well as the remarkably high social and official status of Flade.
It was that status which circulated news and opinions about the case not only into the works of Loos, Binsfeld, and Del Rio, but into other courts in distant parts of Germanophone Europe, including Bavaria.

Crimen Excepta: Torture, Jesuits and Witches in Early Seventeenth Century Germany   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Witchcraft was considered a crimen excepta, an exceptional crime, a grievous crime that involved dealings between the Devil and humans, treason against the Christian church.
As previously mentioned, sanctions were held against him until he could prove that he did not intend his work published without the permission of the order and of the Church (who began monitoring publications and marking them acceptable or not with the Council of Trent).
By attacking the arguments of fellow Jesuits (del Rio) and those authors approved by Jesuit authorities (like Binsfeld and Bouget) he drew a philosophical line in the sand, a intellectual demarcation that could force the members of his order and of the church hierarchy to veritably choose sides.
