About 500 members of the Retired Teachers of Manitoba protested outside the legislature, in what is becoming an annual but so far futile exercise, to get cost of living adjustments that meet inflation.

Public school programs in Manitoba will see a $30-million boost from the provincial government in the next school year — the largest funding increase in the past 17 years, Education Minister Peter Bjornson said Monday.
The additional funding translates into an overall 3.3 per cent budget increase, and brings the provincial education budget to $956 million.
Some of the extra money will be invested in programs such as special needs education and English as a second language training, Bjornson said.
