My View on Exchange and Conflict Theories -- Peterson B. Zhou
According to Peter Blau, "rewards that are exchanged can be either intrinsic(love, affection, respect) or extrinsic(money, physical labor) the parties cannot always reward each other equally; when there is inequality in the exchange, a difference of power will emerge within an association"(in Ritzer,1996).
While Homans' exchange theory emphasized on micro level, and Peter Blau's structural exchange theory focused on macro level, Emerson's efforts in linking micro level to macro structure is similar to the paradigmatic integration advocated by rational choice theorists in their attempts (mainly in Coleman's) on studying micro/macro issues.
Blau's concepts are criticized for being too vague as some conflicts theorists concepts and models have the same fate.

Blau and Blau thus conclude that general levels of inequality affect rates of rape and robbery indirectly, via the way they encourage negative social relations such as marriage breakdowns.
Blau and Blau predicted that larger populations would increase crime rates because they would increase the number of social encounters which could turn violent as a result of pent-up aggression.
Blau and Blau believe that this fact provides one more piece of evidence in favor of their central proposition that "racial socioeconomic inequalities are a major source of much criminal violence."

Blau says it is the primary form of theorizing in the social sciences.
Blau does refer to other evidence believes his theory is relevant to relatively diverse orgs.
The assumption Blau makes in the foregoing is that the problems of coordination and communication in differentiated structures have feedback effects that create resistance to further differentiation, which is the reason why the marginal influence of size on differentiation declines with increasing size.

 Peter Blau Summary
Peter Michael Blau, a renowned author and professor, was born in Vienna in 1918, to Theodor I. Blau and Bertha Selka Blau.
Blau's first marriage to Zena Smith in 1948 produced one daughter, Pamela Lisa; he also had a daughter, Reva Theresa, with his second wife, Judith Rae Fritz, whom he married in 1968.
Blau left Columbia in 1988 to become the Robert Broughton Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina, a position he still held in 2000.

Blau admits that this is "merely a restatement of one part of the original generalization." For example, in a factory, production can be increased by adding workers, but the marginal increment of output resulting from adding more and more workers without changing plant size and equipment eventually declines (obviously).
Prop 2.3: the differentiation of large orgs into subunits stems the decline in the economy of scale in management with increasing size, that is, the decline in the decrease in the proportion of managerial personnel with increasing size.
Blau repeats all of these props in his conclusion, without relating it extensively to his supporting data (of which there is much in his article- it is very much an empirical research work, and all of his propositions except 2.3 are strongly supported by a comprehensive data set).

 Colleagues Remember Peter Blau
Peter Blau, a refugee from the Anschluss, used to tell a joke from his youth that involved God assigning attributes to the various nations.
Peter told this story to illustrate the idea that social identities and their complex interrelationships might be organized according to an underlying logic.
During a reception for me at the Blau household only a few days after Peter had undergone bypass surgery, I remarked to Judith, his wife, and a remarkable intellectual figure in her own right, that it seemed dangerous for him to be entertaining so soon after a major operation.

Blau, Peter M.: Structural Contexts of Opportunities
The distinguished sociologist Peter Blau has opened up a variety of fields with brilliant contributions, ranging from research on social networks of small groups and quantitative studies of formal organizations to more synoptic investigations of populations and the large scale structures which hold them together.
Blau begins by outlining the influences of population structures on intergroup relations and then examining the implications these influences have on occupational opportunities.
Blau then moves on to interpersonal relationships and analyzes the social exchanges in them that reveal the ultimate effects of ethnic, socioeconomic, and other aspects of population structures.

 Blau Space Briefly Explained
Social space is sometimes called "Blau space", after the sociologist Peter Blau, who wrote about the role of individual and social characteristics in organizing social patterns.
Distance and the force of homophily in Blau space is still not well understood and there remains much research to be conducted.
Nevertheless, the concepts of Blau space and social distance can be used to understand social life, and even manipulate it.

Blau had been obsessed with the tales since he was 14, when his father's book-dealer friend introduced him to "The Baker Street Journal," a periodical dedicated to all things Sherlockian.
Blau's guests then prove their knowledge of "the canon" by guessing which story each ornament is associated with.
That gave Blau the perfect opportunity to acquire two adjoining apartments and have them joined—one to live in and one to house his collection of books, dolls, paintings and other items relating to the resident of 221B Baker Street.

Scholars have devoted considerable attention to examining whether, as Blau and Blau argued, inequality is more influential for racial minorities than for whites; and in so doing, they have explored the degree to which intragroup versus intergroup inequality is more salient in accounting for race-specific violence.
Blau and Blau's own research demonstrated a positive link between inequality and violent crime, and showed that interracial inequality is more influential than intraracial inequality on such rates for metropolitan areas of the United States (U.S.).
Blau and Blau emphasize that ascriptively-based inequality leads to diffuse aggression, which is likely to result in more expressive than instrumental forms of violence.

Researchers have linked variations in rates of urban violent crime—murder, rape, robbery, and assault—to variations in geographical region, income level, and race, according to sociologists Judith and Peter Blau.
This suggests that in fact inequality is a stronger influence when disadvantaged people associate closely with each other, learn each other's attitudes, and have opportunities to collectively organize criminal activities.
Blau and Blau propose that the inequality factor is the most important for explaining high rates of violent crime in U.S. cities, and they set out to provide both a theory and empirical evidence to support this claim.

 FORMAL ORGANIZATION
Blau does refer to other evidence supportive of his conclusions and this basis believes much of the content of this article is relevant to a fairly wide variety of formal organizations.
Blau believes that theorizing in the social sciences usually takes the form of the pattern model whereby something is explained when it is so related to a set of other elements that together they constitute a unified system.
Blau takes social structure to mean that people differ in status and social affiliation, that they occupy different positions and ranks, and that they belong to different groups and subunits of various sorts.

However, Homans's insights are sometimes referred to by "orthodox" members of the rational choice community in sociology as being psychological.
Peter Blau grew severely disappointed with rational choice theory and returned to structuralist theory of some sort.
