PETER BUELL PORTER, son of Col. Joshua Porter, was one of the greatest military leaders of the War of 1812.
PETER AUGUSTUS PORTER, son of Col. Peter A. Porter, is one of the leading men of the State, and has long been a central figure in the political, industrial and civic affairs of Western New York.
Porter was elected by heavy pluralities, the rest being a significant tribute to him as a leader and a decisive indorsement of his policy.

Porter was then appointed a canal commissioner in 1811 and served as a major general in the New York Volunteers (1812-1815).
Porter ran unsuccessfully for the governorship of New York in 1817 but became regent of the State University of New York from 1824 to 1830.

When war was declared Porter offered his services as a commercial trader to become the assistant quartermaster general, as well as becoming a brigadier general in the New York militia.
At Black Rock, Porter was under the command of Alexander Smyth whom he believed to be wholly incompetent.
Porter's men also met with great success at the siege of Fort Erie where his force helped bring about the British withdrawal.

Porter, Peter Buell (4 Aug. 1773-20 Mar. 1844), politician,soldier, and secretary of war, was born in Salisbury, Connecticut, the son of Joshua Porter, a speculator, and Abigail Buell.
Porter relocated to Canandaigua, New York, in 1795 to establish a law practice and two years later gained appointment as the clerk of Ontario County.
Porter's military correspondence is in the National Archives, Records of the Secretary of War, RG 107, and the National Archives, Records of the Chief Engineer's Office, RG 65.

Before launching his military career, Porter was a partner in a firm that controlled transportation along the Niagara Falls portage, the legendary route between Lewiston and the upper Niagara River that bypassed the falls.
Porter’s son, Col. Peter A. Porter, was a casualty of the Civil War.

John Porter's residence in Windsor appears to have been located near the 'Little River' at its junction with the Connecticut and between the residence of George Phelps and Joseph Loomis, and nearly opposite those of Henry Wolcott and Matthew Allyn.
I think that the dates I have given here, as to John Porter's arrival in the country, the date of his death and those of his wife and daughter, will be found correct.
This day was presented to this courte, the last will and testament of John Porter, late of Windsor, deceased, and the inventory of his estate, anno 1648, April 20.

My Peter Porter was born 8/14/1773 to Col. Joshua Porter and Abigail (Buell) Porter, and was one of six children.
P.B. Porter graduated from Yale in 1791 and was an ernest advocate of the war with Great Britain in 1812.
Madison and married Letitia Breckenridge in Sept. of 1818.They had two children, Elizabeth and Peter A. Gen. Porter died at Niagara Falls, N.Y. One of the sons of his brother,Judge Augustus Porter, with his second wife, Jane Howell Porter, was named Peter Buell Porter who died June 15, 1871 unmarried.

I have a book titled "The descendents of John Porter of Windsor, Conn. in the line of his great, great grandson, Col. Joshua Porter, M.D. of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., with some account of the families into which they married." The book was printed at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in 1882.
The children of Gen. P.B. Porter were Elizabeth L. Porter, born 4-19-1823 and died unmarried 1-28-1876; and Peter A. Porter, born 7-14-1827 and married Mary C.P. Breckenridge." (his cousin?)
I have much more information on the Porter as well as the Bird families if you are interested.

Joshua Forman, in 1808, was first to introduce a concurrent resolution in the State Legislature providing for a survey of such a canal.
The commissioners appointed under this resolution in 1810 were Gouverneur Morris, Stephen Van Rensselaer, William North, Thomas Eddy and Peter B. Porter, and they were empowered to explore the whole route for inland navigation from the Hudson River to Lake Ontario and to Lake Erie.
Porter was made chairman of a Congressional committee of twenty, and in due course reported a bill in which was a provision for "opening canals from the Hudson to Lake Ontario and around the Falls of Niagara." Both bills were defeated, however.
