Peter Darrell Trust - the choreographic award
By far the most exciting and focused project by the Trust to date has been the development of a dream to institute a Peter Darrell Choreographic Award.
This became a reality in 1997 when it was announced that the Trust had been awarded a grant of £98,498.00 from the Scottish Arts Council's New Direction Lottery Fund towards the cost of creating and establishing the choreographic award and to fund the publication of a book on Peter's work.
The Award is a platform for emerging choreographers as Peter was particularly keen to foster and encourage choreographic talent.

Peter Darrell CBE, a ballet choreographer who founder of the Scottish Ballet, was born at Richmond, Surrey, on September 16, 1929 and died in Glasgow on December 2, 1987.

"Peter Darrell was a man of theatre above all else, and his ballets and his artistic judgements never ignored the fact that dancing is not a remote and introspective activity, but an art of the theatre.

However, despite the impressive lifts and powerful dancing, the piece was robbed of potential impact because of the a lack of emotional connection.
It was followed by Peter Darrell's poignant "Five Rückert Songs", a series of dances that embody the feelings in Friedrich Rückert's poetry.
Beautifully sung by mezzo soprano Karen Cargill, the songs are about love, loss and loneliness, and Darrell took these feelings and expressed them his elegant choreography.

Ballet-Dance Magazine - Rambert Dance Company - Mahler and Dance - Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh
It is rare to have such a large orchestra to accompany a dance group, but it was an inspired idea, and the orchestra was superb.
Following "Songs of a Wayfarer" was the premiere of the Rambert Dance Company's new production of Peter Darrell's "Five Rückert Songs." Based loosely Mahler's songs of the same name, the ballet is centered around the reminisces ofa woman coming to terms with her own mortality.
Originally choreographed in 1978, and one of the centerpieces of the Scottish Ballet repertory, "Five Rückert Songs" is given a passionate new look with richly hued costumes and set by Yolanda Sonnabend.

 TIME.com: Hoffmann Grounded -- Jul 23, 1973 -- Page 1
With innovative ballet subjects like these, Britain's Peter Darrell has become known over the past decade as a choreographer who was going to be up with the times at all costs.
Introduced last week at Manhattan's Lincoln Center by the American Ballet Theater, it is a shocker of another sort: an oldfashioned, behind-the-times entertainment that will offend no one, please some of the public, and bore serious balletomanes to distraction.
Darrell created Hoffmann after moving his London-based Western Theater Ballet to Glasgow in 1970, where it became the government-subsidized (98%) Scottish Theater Ballet.

Under its founder-director Peter Darrell, Scottish Ballet was one of Britain’s outstanding companies, with a fine and very distinct repertoire admirably performed by a strong team of dancers.
But after his premature death in 1987 it declined under a series of directors and new policies, alleviated at intervals by revivals of a few Darrell ballets and some Ashton borrowings.
The most popular, “Fearful Symmetries”, seemed to me too obviously a Forsythe imitation, and not as good as Peter Martins’s treatment of the same John Adams score.

Herodias with its lavish costumes and use of the spoken word was more about the realisation of a theatrical concept than it was about steps - Peter the producer was equally inspiring as Peter the choreographer.
The choreography and music so knitted together that time seems suspended and at the end we'd be wrung dry but exhilarated.
My memory of Wedding Present is Peter's manner which was one of quiet excitement and one felt something special was being created during the rehearsals on tour.

Barbieri staged it well; I wasn’t mad about Yo Kawamura in the title role, but Samantha Camejo showed charm as her rival Blanche, Iselin Bowen brought fun to the garrulous Mrs Dimple (who ends up as Britannia), and the men were not bad at all, led by Jamie Carter and Michell Alysson.
Tall, pale and fair-haired Carter was a surprising choice to play the lead in Peter Darrell’s “Othello”, but it was a real treat to see this classic dance drama by one of Britain’s best and most shamefully neglected choreographers, handsomely staged by Kenn Burke and well danced by its small cast.
In passing, let me briefly mention the performance I saw a few weeks ago by Ballet Central, the similar group of senior students from the Central School of Ballet.
