Peter Dodds McCormick, a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church and composer of "Advance, Australia Fair." The late Mr.
McCormick was official precentor of the General Presbyterian Assembly of New South Wales and of the Commonwealth assembly.
McCormick in 1896 was one of the principal workers in originating the mission work which was begun in a private house at Dover Heights, an outlying part of the Waverley parish.

Peter Dodds McCormick was born in Glasgow in 1834 or 1835 (date uncertain) and came to Australia in 1855.
McCormick's main interests were choral music, Scottish heritage and the Presbyterian Church, and he retired from teaching in 1885 to concentrate on these interests.
McCormick died nine years later in 1916 and was buried in Rookwood Cemetery, where his grave can still be visited today.

Many Australians are hard pressed to remember one of the two official verses, and most of them are completely unaware that the original song has five.

Found by one of our researchers, Jack Morgan’s song was apparently inspired by a cruise trip down under 16 years earlier.
