Doherty's problems with drug addiction and the erratic nature of his behavior only continued to worsen, and not long afterwards he was arrested for burglarizing Carl Barât's apartment while his old bandmate was away on tour.

ELEANOR HALL: Australian scientist Peter Doherty, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1996, has warned that research on cures for diseases like AIDS and cancer is not likely to advance very far if scientists can't test their trial vaccines on primates.
PETER DOHERTY: Obviously a lot of people feel very strongly against experiments in animals, but the reality of current research, particularly as we try, say, to develop a vaccine for AIDS, is that we're not likely to get very far unless we do experiments in animals.
AIDS is particularly difficult because we can't use a lab mouse, we have to use a primate, and so there is a lot of sensitivity about that and it's a matter of relative values.

The Libertines: The Libertines -- Ink Blot Magazine
East End kids Peter Doherty and Carl Barat had been knocking around London trying to morph into a great band since 1996; sometime around 2001 (joined by Hassall and Powell) it happened.
By The Libertines's release in 2002 The Libertines were already a bigger story than their music, and within a year would be a genuine tabloid phenomenon thanks to Doherty's open heroin and crack problems, frequent disappearances/reappearances, and, by the release of 2004's self-titled follow-up, the unclear status of the future of the band.
Shot after the "Freedom Gig" in 2003 (celebrating Doherty's release from prison for burgling Barat's flat!), it's a touched-up closeup of Barat and Doherty showing off their homemade 'Libertine' tattoos, Barat pouting for the lens, Doherty shrinking coquettishly from it.
