In 1966 Domenici successfully ran for a position on the Albuquerque City Commission and in 1968 was elected Commission Chairman.
Two years later Domenici successfully ran for a position in the U.S. Senate and became the first New Mexico Republican to be elected to the position in 38 years.
Domenici polled 204,253 votes (54 percent) to 173,815 (46 percent) for the Democrat Jack Daniels.

Domenici said that rising demand in China and India is pushing up crude oil prices, which closed at nearly $55 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on March 11.
In fairness, Senator Domenici did mention that he would be open to including a tougher motor vehicle fuel efficiency standard in the energy bill his committee is putting together.

President Clinton vetoed the Energy and Water bill because this rider was included in it, and while the House voted to override it, the Senate did not have the votes to override the veto until the Silvery Minnow Rider was dropped from the bill.
Domenici ultimately agreed to drop the rider after communicating with Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt regarding the management of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District.
