Finley Peter Dunne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peter Finley Dunne was born in Chicago on July 10, 1867.
Originally named Peter Dunne, to honor his mother, who had died when he was in high school, he took her family name as his middle name some time before 1886, going by PF Dunne, reversed the two names in 1888, for Finley P. Dunne, and later used simply the initials, FP Dunne.
Dunne was a charter member of a social circle of Chicago writers who frequently lampooned and competed with their New York City colleagues in pranks and outlandish stunts.

Consider Dunne as presenting "Irish-American" perspectives: Ireland as a colonized country, the perspective on imperialism, reactions against American Anglophilia.
Dunne switched gears in 1900, moving to New York and national commentary, leaving the community-based Chicago perspective behind.
Students may try their hands at writing a short, short story with some of the punch of Dunne's best work, such as "The Wanderers," or writing a column of commentary on national policy comparable to "Immigration," which again in our time is a big issue.

Dunne, who has spent the last 12 years as an assistant coach at several schools, including stints at fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference members Siena (1999-2001) and Manhattan (1998-99), said he felt ready for the challenge of coaching at another Roman Catholic institution.

Heath Anthology of American LiteratureFinley Peter Dunne - Author Page
Born to Irish immigrants on Chicago's West Side in 1867, Finley Peter Dunne began a career as a newspaperman in the city in 1884.
Dunne takes the late-nineteenth-century journalistic phenomenon of urban local color and extends it, through his feeling for place and community, to evoke Bridgeport as the most solidly realized ethnic neighborhood in nineteenth-century American literature.
More pronounced in the early Chicago work than in the lighter national commentary, Dunne's darker side may be explained by his roots in the oppressed, colonized culture of Ireland and his journalist's education into the harsh realities of nineteenth-century urban life.

This virtual anonymity may have contributed to Dunne's willingness to bluntly address such topics as the war in the Philippines, the racial assumptions of the movement for an Anglo-Saxon alliance, and the political influence of the beet sugar industry ("Sweet Beet iv Liberty, iv thee I sing").
Although he does not appear to have formally joined any of the anti-imperialist organizations, Dunne was one of the most prolific and outspoken anti-imperialist writers, and his contributions to the debate about imperialism were widely appreciated by writers who did publicly align themselves with the Anti-Imperialist League.
Ernest Crosby cited Dunne as an example of a humorist capable of using satire to end militarism as Cervantes had with chivalry.

The thrust of his critique was that we had here an activist judge using the notion of the public interest in order to interfere in what was actually a private matter.
However, just mentioning the famous "worm" undermines his argument, since it is now history that this worm was precisely what allowed Peter Dunne's party to do much better at the last elections than the polls had been predicting prior to his television appearance in that campaign!
