Peter Fitzgerald - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A different Peter Fitzgerald is deputy police commissioner of the Irish police force (An Garda Síochána) and responsible for the United Nation's investigation into the death of Rafik Hariri and the subsequent FitzGerald Report.
Fitzgerald defeated the well-known Democratic incumbent, Carol Moseley Braun in 1998, and served for one term in the Senate.
Fitzgerald declined to run for reelection largely because many Republican insiders who had failed to support him in his first run in 1998 had made it clear he would not have their support again, in what he knew would be a much tougher race.

 washingtonpost.com: The Prosecutor Never Rests
Fitzgerald lost sight of the bigger picture." His demand that Times reporter Judith Miller and Time magazine correspondent Matthew Cooper be forced to testify prompted the paper to call the case "a major assault" on relationships between reporters and their secret sources, the very essence of reporting on the abuse of power.
Fitzgerald blazed back, charging in an unusually pointed brief that the judge had "displayed a disturbing lack of objectivity." He accused him of "petty harassment" of prosecutors and asked an appeals court to remove the judge from the case because of a conflict of interest involving his wife.
Fitzgerald said in the interview that he is not disappointed by the plea bargain that ended the case, only by what he considers Arnaout's later failure to tell what he knows.

USNews.com: The lawman investigating a White House leak just won't take no for an answer
These days, Fitzgerald, who was named the U.S. attorney in Chicago just days before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, is getting more than his fair share of national headlines--but for an entirely different kind of dot-connecting that has alarmed American media organizations and outraged champions of the First Amendment.
The story, by now, is a familiar one: In December 2003, Fitzgerald, 44, was named as a Justice Department special counsel to investigate whether Bush administration officials illegally leaked the name of a covert CIA operative named Valerie Plame to conservative columnist Robert Novak.
Fitzgerald has been criticized for his handling of the charity investigations, which fizzled out in a weak plea bargain, a modest jail sentence, and failed cooperation from a key defendant, who the judge in the case concluded was more a victim of guilt by association than a financial backer of al Qaeda.
