 Music IV, 19/06/06, Distractions
When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, he did so with the excuse of leaving to spend time with his family and tend his garden, not wishing to be “anchored to the footlights”.
Peter was encouraged to deepen his sound a little more, and as a result several session musicians joined the ranks – including long–time collaborators and members of his touring band – world famous bassist Tony Levin, drummer Jerry Marrotta and Mr.
PG IV is largely about the contrast between the ideas of trust, communication and influence, coupled with their attachment to nature, enduring culture and ritual, and are explored in every one of the songs, the antagonism generated by the meeting of the two providing much of the album's power and insight.

To call Peter Gabriel's third self-titled project a landmark album is a huge understatement, not only in terms of his career, but also in terms of modern pop music.
Peter Gabriel's sixth studio album as a solo artist is among his finest efforts to date.
Peter Gabriel's second live album is a mixed bag of predominantly newer material recorded while on tour in support of the Us album.

 Peter Gabriel
I've been a big Peter Gabriel fan for a couple of years now.  Strangely, I only discovered he was the lead singer of Genesis a while after I started buying his albums, and thus had to go back out and spend more money collecting the albums he did with Genesis.
The first solo album by Peter Gabriel is not a masterpiece, as you perfectly say; but we know that the passage from the leadership of a famous group to a solo carrier is always painful.
Peter also contributes his best vocal performance of the album, both in singing and in his lyrics (which I guess are about being in a rain of blood, perhaps after a heavy battle or something like that).

The History of Rock Music. Peter Gabriel: biography, discography, reviews, links
Peter Gabriel, who had helped invent progressive-rock when he was Genesis' vocalist, became a tormented and angst-ridden poet of the post-industrial neuroses, capable of delivering harrowing visions of the psychological holocaust in tightly crafted musical formats.
Gabriel's ethno-electronic grooves (which, in the meantime, had become a chic genre) already had roots in modern philosophy, but with the further abstraction that it underwent in the Passion it "became" a philosophy of its own.
Gabriel indulges in several formats, as if to explore the same theme through different eyes: from the whirling Persian dervishes of The Feeling Begins to the minimalist concerto of Zaar, from the psychedelic ecstasy of Open (another highlight) to the distant echoes of galactic music that constitute Stygmata.

Gabriel never sounded better before than he does on this album, and his delivery on this song proves it.
Finally, the digital effects aren't truly necessary, as Gabriel and David Lord (who are also the two producers of the album) offer sparkling piano notes as Gabriel probes another case: Lech Walesa, leader of the Solidarity movement in Poland, who was sent into a mental hospital.
For all it's sonic experimentality, Peter Gabriel has compiled an album of pure, dark, often optimistic pop songs and married them with a more supreme world beat for a mix which is absolutely impressive, seeing as how Gabriel himself discovered this a couple of years before making the album.

Ground and Sky review - Peter Gabriel - Security
Security is part of that early 80s trifecta shared by Remain in Light (Talking Heads) and Discipline (King Crimson) where the group attempts to merge art rock with world music.
Security is the most muscular-sounding of the bunch, with a focus on massive sounding polyrhythms built from layers of drums and synthesizer.
For Security, Gabriel rallied a strong team of support, and given who's on board, the result is something that flies impressively afar from prior Genesis, current King Crimson (bassist Tony Levin), Synergy (keyboardist Larry Fast), and solo Peter Hammill (the Lord/Hammill/Ellis axis).

Either way, SECURITY is a powerful, unorthodox masterpiece that proves, in my mind at least, that Peter Gabriel was and is one of the most talented musicians who ever lived.

Birdy - Peter Gabriel - Similar Albums
Peter Gabriel's first foray into soundtracks was for Alan Parker's contemplative film Birdy and is a successful companion piece, providing a backdrop that is moody and evocative.
Nearly half of the album's dozen tracks incorporate threads from material found on Gabriel's 1982 Security set, including "Close Up," which makes use of keyboard passages from "Family Snapshot," and "The Heat," which is a reworking of "The Rhythm of the Heat" and builds to a frenzied percussive crescendo.
The Gabriel set was released in 1998, but instead of a second box following it in 1999, the single-disc Turn It on Again: The Hits appeared.

Although Peter Gabriel received the greatest-hits treatment with 1990's SHAKING THE TREE, the 13 years following that collection made it clear that another, more comprehensive retrospective was needed.
During this time, Gabriel recorded only two official solo albums, US and UP, but the avant-pop icon also pursued other audio/visual projects, such as OVO, his contribution to London's massive Millennium Dome exhibit.
Moving on to latter-day Gabriel, HIT offers up the wonderfully grimy stomp of "Digging in the Dirt," the yearning "More Than This," and the previously unreleased "Burn You Up, Burn You Down," which hearkens back to his gloriously quirky mid-'80s period.
