Gunn was a sophisticated "hipster", a dapper dresser who loved cool jazz; where other gumshoes were often coarse, Peter Gunn was portrayed as the epitome of "cool".
A feature film, Gunn, was made in 1967, and ABC carried a pilot in 1989 with Peter Strauss in the lead role, but they failed to catch on.

I will agree that is a bit of a stretch, mind you, as Gunn was definitely a real detective, not a front man that eventually became an equal partner to a female boss.
One of the trademarks of the series was the collection of odd characters that Gunn relied on to supply him with information.
Maybe Peter Gunn will be the next in a series of old TV shows re-made into big screen epics...

I found a cd of the Peter Gunn music by Henry Mancini 11 years ago and REALLY dug the cool jazz on it but never saw and episode untill the VHS set came out a couple of years ago.
