Peter Joseph Andrew Hammill (born 5 November 1948) is an English singer-songwriter, and a founder member of progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator.
Peter Hammill was born in Ealing, west London, and moved with his family to Derby when he was 12[1].
Hammill's influence can also be found in early Marillion albums; his Fool's Mate and Over albums are found on the bedroom scene of Fugazi, and much of the vocal delivery of Fish stems from Hammill's influence.

Peter Hammill was born on Bonfire Night, 1948, in Ealing, and educated at Beaumont College, Manchester University (Liberal Studies in Science) with further education in Van der Graaf Generator.
Peter Hammill played fill-in gigs at the Lyceum during 1969 and recorded an intended solo album - 'The Aerosol Grey Machine' - which, by virtue of the musicians taking part, unwittingly became a band album which duly gave birth to the formation of Van der Graaf Generator Mark II.

Their complex music was as often brutal as it was lyrical; barely-controlled chaos and a sense of sonic adventure were the primary characteristics of the band's chequered nine-album career.

Peter Hammill's solo debut is also one of his weaker albums, made up of short, poppy ditties that were an intentional departure from his work with Van Der Graaf Generator.
This is the first Peter Hammill solo album after the reunification of Van Der Graaf Generator, and lyrical themes that were explored throughout the Still Life album, most explicitly on the classic track "La Rossa", are given more intimate and detailed attention on this, one of Hammill's finest solo efforts.

The most influential and best remembered of these is the 1975 LP (Hammill's fifth) for which he assumed the identity of "anarchic" teenager Rikki Nadir.

In the ethos of the group - one to which Peter has continued to subscribe since its demise - there was a marked aversion to the categorization of any sort; barely controlled chaos and a sense of adventure, rather than pomp, were the primary characteristics of their chequered nine album career.
Peter has been noted for his words (and his care with and for them) since the beginning of his thirty-six year long career; in this continuous 42 minute song cycle his lyrics examine instances of language failing to work or to communicate...the impossibilities of words, where meaning, logic and intention fall apart into incoherence.
Peter finished the final mix on this project at 5pm on December 5th 2003; forty-two hours later he had a heart attack, from which he is currently recovering.

Peter Hammill is known to many as an erudite man, thinking a little -or a lot even- further than your basic songwriter does.
Even though Hammill in the notes refers to the songs being finitely bound (and therefore incoherent), more often than not we do float from one to the next without a pause, the tracks bridged together.
As much as I like Hammill's talent for making slow songs, this album shows that there is a lot of strength in his strong songs.

Yes, typical of Hammill to release an album of his solo material even saying that The Future Now is an encore, but having it harbour much more: Van der Graaf Generators' Afterwards, Darkness 11/11 and Central Hotel from Sitting Targets.
This probably is largely due to the fact that these are not easy songs to play and also the way he tries to fill up the melodies with extra motives.
Recorded in 1992, this album is a rather naked introduction to the music of Peter Hammill.
