  Outpost Gallifrey: Reviews
Following Nathan-Turner's suggestion, Peter Howell was asked to submit several demos (two of which are included on Volume 2) and, based upon these demos it was decided that the workshop would begin producing the music.
This began with Howell's fantastic revamp of the theme music, which included a full stereo single version (also included on Volume 2) and mono opening and closing titles, which are included on both Volumes 3 and 4.
Peter Howell and Paddy Kingsland headed a stable of talented Radiophonic Workshop artists, including Roger Limb, Malcolm Clarke, and Jonathan Gibbs, which would continue to provide music for Doctor Who until the Sylvester McCoy era.

Howell and Ferdinando quickly became more interested in the tape deck as an instrument of creativity rather than for mere reproduction purposes, and the equipment began to exert a greater fascination for both men than the dubious pleasures of playing live with a group of limited ability and horizons.
Howell end Ferdinando slowly retreated into the subterranean world of makeshift home studies, writing songs whilst improvising and experimenting with various aspects of recording techniques including bouncing tracks, tape loops and echo.
By this stage the Howell family had moved to a larger house in Hove, enabling Peter to exchange what was essentially a glorified den for a more professional, mini home recording studio.

The scale of the work which he now presents is considerably smaller than that of his previous study but, within the limitations imposed by the series in which it appears, this is a very valuable contribution and one which will encourage school and university teachers to find a place for Martial in the curriculum.
Howell offers no commentary on these lines but it is worth observing that Martial nowhere resigns the right to offer naughtiness which is rather less forward and wit which is somewhat more veiled (Plin.
Howell's Introduction is brief but contains much valuable information on the life and times of Martial, his relations with Domitian, the genre of the epigram, the metres adopted and the manuscript editions.

Newman's Church at Littlemore; Peter Howell; Oxford Art Journal 1983
On the other hand, his membership, after his conversion, of the CounterReformation order of Oratorians, combined with his alarm at the extreme prejudices of Pugin and his admirers, caused him to express grave concern at the excesses of what he called (when writing in Latin) "Gothicismus".
Considering that Pugin had carried his fanaticism to the point of expressing the wish that the dome of St Peter's might collapse, Newman's reaction was hardly surprising.
By 1848 he was argning that, especially since Gothic had died and had had to be revived, it should be altered, "like an old dress, which fitted a man well twenty years back but must be altered to fit him now", so as to "suit the living ritual of the nineteenthcentury".

Dudley Simpson's simple but elegant acoustic ensemble gave way to the Radiophonic Workshop's expansive, all-electronic synth-orchestra, and nowhere was this contrast as evident as with the first story of Nathan-Turner's reign, The Leisure Hive.
Peter Howell, who also arranged the new version of the show's famous theme music, let loose with a barrage of music that fits the definition of a "wall of sound," with thick, Vangelis-style texture drenching much of the action.
In his small portion of the liner notes, Howell confesses that The Leisure Hive's music was, perhaps, "too omnipresent" - and he does have a point, as Leisure Hive may have been the most music-heavy Doctor Who until The Curse Of Fenric or, perhaps, The Five Doctors.
