One interesting thing about these books is that Philip Jose Farmer has several interesting parallels to Peter Jairus Frigate, no matter how he tries to deny that Frigate is supposed to be himself.
PJF gets my vote as the most disappointing SF author in existence and also as the one most in need of an editor.

The constant fear of a return of the English to Boston, and the necessity of providing against pillaging and foraging incursions into the country along the coast, required the exercise of unceasing vigilance on the part of the State and local authorities.
Colonel Lovell, who sometime before had become a brigadier-general in the militia, was one of the commanders, and, as already said, the brig "Hazard" which took part in the expedition, had a number of Hingham men in her crew.
In one instance, however, the General Court threatened a fine of twenty per cent if a requisition was not promptly responded to; and the town voted "to comply, provided it be not brought as a precedent in future time;" this was in the year 1781.

The theme of The Riverworld Series is probably most succinctly expressed in Chapter Thirty-One of The Dark Design by the character Peter Jairus Frigate, Philip Jose Farmer's surrogate in the series.
Frigate explains that man is a creature stretched between animal and superman, with a superman being a man or woman who is free of prejudices and neuroses, who realizes his or her full potential, who acts on the basis of love, and who refuses to follow the herd.

One of the main faults of the book is that an excessively large number of chapters deal with science fiction writer Peter Jairus Frigate who by chance remarkably resembles the author Philip Jose Farmer.
The main purpose of this character seems to be to serve as something of a mouthpice for Farmer to vent his views on humanity, the nature of people, religion and Riverworld....And all the subtly of a seal clubbing.
There are numerous unnecessary digressions, including several dull chapters of backstory on Farmer's alterego, the science-fiction writer Peter Jairus Frigate (check out the initials), who is actually a relatively minor character.

And as previous reviewers have noted, there are lengthy digressions inside the head of Peter J. Frigate, a thinly-disguised version of the series author.
