Lonard, Australian golf's man of the moment in the pre-Christmas campaign, shot a six-under 65 for a share of the lead, never looking troubled by a course that was playing much slower than it was during the practice rounds early in the week because of heavy rain.
Lonard, who has the opposite problem from Scott, having won nine tournaments at home and not one overseas, did not get the chance to practice because the course was under water and deemed unplayable when he planned his practice hit on Wednesday.
Lonard said he feels there is room for improvement on his opening round, tipping the winning score for the event will be similar to the 20-under Els shot to win last year.
