  Steven A. Burd 1949— - RAILROAD TO CONSULTING, AILING CHAINS, TURNING SAFEWAY AROUND, EXPANSION
Magowan was supposedly Burd's superior in the governance of the company, but in terms of micromanagement Burd had few peers, and he soon made his presence felt throughout the company.
On April 30, 1993, Burd was appointed CEO as well as president of Safeway, with Magowan remaining as chairman of the board but no longer involved with the day-to-day operations of the company.
On May 12, 1998, Burd was elected Safeway's chairman of the board, with Magowan remaining only as a director.
