  E. M. Forster
Forster's childhood and much of his adult life was dominated by his mother and his aunts.
In 1949 Forster refused a knighthood and in 1951 he collaborated with Eric Crozier on the libretto of Benjamin Britten's opera Billy Budd, which was based on Herman Melville's novel (film 1962, dir.
However, Forster's characters were not one-dimensional heroes and villains, and except his devotion to such values as tolerance and sense of comedy, he was uncommitted.

Forster was already well known in scientific circles in England and had recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
He could write perceptively about the formation of islands or the nature of trade in primitive societies, but his academic advancement was continually prejudiced by his capacity to quarrel with his patrons and friends, his incompetence in money matters and his subsequent need to devote time as a hack writer to redeem his debts.
It would seem therefore that it was not only appropriate for the elder Forster to donate a number of ‘curiosities’ to the Ashmolean in view of its importance as a museum, but also that the donation was stimulated by personal friendship.

Forster's non-judgemental narratives demonstrate a genuine empathy with the dilemmas faced by women and an understanding of the often unreasonable sense of duty imposed upon them, most painfully often by the women themselves.
Forster tackles the difficulties and relationships of family life with an admirably unsentimental eye, which has enabled her to write about issues as emotionally charged as adoption and Alzheimer's Disease.
Hidden Lives, Forster's investigation of her own maternal family, was triggered by fragmentary stories Forster heard as a child about her grandmother, and about a mysterious elegant lady who paid an unexpected and unsettling visit shortly before the grandmother's death.

Forster maintained that didactic novels were, invariably, inherently less good -- as novels.
If an author's politico-religio-social agenda is what directly drives the work, I take that to mean, no genuinely valuable interrogation of reality can take place, and the result will be a literary virtuality built as exclusively from the author's expressed political philosophy as that author can manage.
In Forster's sense of things, I have always tried very hard to not be a "political" novelist.
