Guardian Unlimited | World dispatch | Australian government rocked by phonecard sleaze row
When it was belatedly discovered, Reith and his boss, the prime minister, John Howard, sat on the secret for six months while internal and police investigations were undertaken.
Unhelpfully for Reith, the investigating solicitor general glamorised the case by naming the prime suspects in the allegedly fraudulent use of the card "Miss X" and "Mr Y".
In parliament today the opposition sought to capitalise from Odgers's suggestion that government officials must have known about the fraud in 1994, as she was warned off using the card by an official that year.

Reith, once tipped as a possible successor to Prime Minister John Howard, was forced to retire after falsely claiming that asylum seekers, or boatpeople, that had arrived at one of Australia’s offshore islands had thrown their children overboard to pressure Australia to take them in.
Reith’s claims were a key factor in the government's resounding 2001 election win, which saw strong support for Howard’s anti-immigrant policies, which also included the storming of a refugee boat by Special Forces and the detention of asylum seekers in Outback prisons.
"Peter Reith is the most discredited politician in Australia's history," Opposition Labor leader Simon Crean told reporters in Adelaide, calling the appointment another "job for the boys".

While Reith's defeat in the MUA dispute meant that he hardly dared whisper about industrial relations changes during the October 3 election campaign, many of the proposals in the “second wave” were contained in the Liberals' October 1 policy announcement.
