Peter Revson, born in 1939 in the first year of World War II, always had considered racing in his American home country as fulfilling a national duty.
Revson´s father and uncle really had been the co-founders of of the group, but his father already had retired from the company´s board of directors in 1958.
Peter Gethin, who had taken over the cockpits of Bruce McLaren after his death in June 1970, pretty fast lost the job again in CanAm; the son of a champion jockey always was fast but also unconsistent.

Peter Jeffrey Revson (born in New York City, February 27, 1939 - died in Johannesburg, South Africa, March 22, 1974) was a racecar and Formula One driver from United States.
The son of Revlon Cosemtics industry magnate Charles Revson, he was an heir to his father's fortune (reportedly worth over $1 billion) who dated some of the most beautiful women in the world.
While in university, he began racing cars and in 1971 drove for McLaren and became the first American to win the Can-Am Championship.

Peter broke Andretti's record of 156.867 for the 500 miles by going the distance at 157.735, only trouble was Big Al was just 000.316 mph faster than Peter, in second place, when the checkered fell.
Revson won two FI Grand Prixs for McLaren in 1973, taking the checker in Canada and Great Britain and scored 38 points, good for fifth place in the final driver's standings.
For the 1974 FI season Peter switched to the UOP Shadow team, which proved to be a disastrous mistake.

Peter arrived in Europe in the early sixties and became part of the FJunior and F3 circus, travelling around on a shoestring, and graduated to F1 in '64 with a Parnell Lotus.
Peter found his relationsip with Teddy Mayer (brother of Timmy) difficult and so moved to the promising Shadow team for '74, but sadly only started two races for the team before crashing fatally in testing prior to the South African GP.
Peter comes across as one of the most eloquent and erudite drivers to have put his thoughts about racing onto paper.

Peter Jeffrey Revlon Revson - “Revvie” or “Revvo” - had everything; looks, charisma, wealth (although his achievements came despite his Revlon heritage), intelligence, education, business acumen and driving talent (summed up by the title of his autobiography, ‘Speed with Style’).
The final verdict went to Revson who, it was felt, had stopped at the right time to get out ahead of the pace car and make up a lap on the others while it held the wrong car behind it.

Educated at Cornell, Revson started racing with one of his classmates Timmy Mayer in Formula Junior, their Rev-Em Racing team being run by Mayer's brother Teddy.
In 1972 he returned to the F1 scene as a regular member of the Yardley McLaren team - which was being run by Teddy Mayer - and in 1973 won both the British and Canadian Grands Prix, the former in most impressive style under difficult conditions.
However, despite his success, Peter had a slightly strained relationship with Mayer and determined to prove himself away from McLaren, he signed to drive for the Shadow F1 team in 1974.
