  Peter Riedel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peter Riedel (August 1905 - November 6, 1998) was a German gliding champion, and was Air Attaché for the Nazi government before and during World War II.
Riedel was born in Dehlitz, Saxony, his father a Lutheran pastor and his mother a professor of theology at the University of Halle.
In 1920, at the age of 15, Riedel attended the first gliding championship held at the Wasserkuppe, taking with him a half-built glider of his own design, which he completed and flew with the help of other attendees at the meet.

You may already have heard the sad news that Peter Riedel, the last survivor of the first gliding competition on the Wasserkuppe in 1920, died quietly in hospital at Ardmore, Oklahoma on 6th November.
Riedel found himself enrolled as a commissioned officer in the Luftwaffe, since his position as a civilian was quite anomalous.
Riedel was arrested by the Swedish authorities and imprisoned for three months as an illegal immigrant.

Santa Barbara, Calif., botanist Peter Riedel was a painstaking observer of plants introduced into Southern California for 40 years before compiling his 1957 book "Plants for Extra-Tropical Regions." He celebrated the gardenia's scent but noted that "the odor becomes offensive as the flowers turn from white to yellow."
By the 1950s, Riedel had counted about 70 species from around Asia, the Pacific and Africa.
Its glorious white blooms turn into berries, which Riedel says are a source of yellow dye.

Peter Riedel's Plants for Extra-Tropical Regions, which was published after his death in the 1950's, is an incredible work that documents much of the plant introduction work that took place in California around the turn of the 20th century.
Although he states that there are few Kangaroo Paws to be found in California, A. manglesii was offered in catalogs in 1911 and again in 1920.
