Jerry Douglas and Peter Rowan, Yonder
Its elements are simplicity itself: one voice (Peter Rowan's) and two instruments, although the combinations shift from song to song.
Rowan says the purpose of the album was to find "new melodies in the old songs, discovering our own way of getting there," and that "there" is "yonder," defined on the cover as "within sight, but not near; further." Rowan and Douglas accomplish the task, getting not only yonder, but beyond.
The Weissenborn guitar's insistent throb opens the next cut, the traditional "Cannonball Blues," in which the strings and Rowan's yodel proclaim that his baby's "gone, solid gone." The dialogue between the two guitars is heartbreaking.

Peter's time is comfortable and loping, so it was nice that Schatz gave Tony some tight rhythm and they respond well to each other with syncopation and rhythm shifts.
Peter was playing his Henderson 12 Fret OOO and I brought along his Ralph Bown 12 Fret O that has recently gotten some bridge repair work done in our shop.
Peter was his usual congenial self and seems happy with his Czech made mandolin.

Music cd reviews of Peter Rowan - Peter Rowan
Singer, song writer, and guitarist Peter Rowan displays why his songs have shown up on so many other people's albums and why fans love him.
Rowan's truegrass glory days came when he was in Bill Monroe's band back in the '66 edition, and then he went all traditional along with Jerry Garcia and the boys in Muleskinner and Old & In The Way...
Somewhere in between came the disasterous would-be pop crossovers with Earth Opera and the Rowans (him and his no-account brothers...) Once all the dust settled, though, this turned out to be the album that he'll be remembered for, with several of his best-beloved (and most coherent) classic tunes.

Produced and arranged by Peter Rowan and co-produced by Tony Rice, You Were There For Me is a collaboration in every sense of the word, featuring Rowan's sublime vocals on ten of his original compositions, and acoustic guitar virtuoso Rice's remarkable instrumental work which evokes, frames and enhances the emotions of each song.
Rowan, whose career has spanned from SeaTrain to Old and In the Way to numerous solo and ensemble projects with Don Edwards and others, is a soulful singer and a poignant songwriter.
Rice, a veteran of the David Grisman Quintet, the Tony Rice Unit, the Bluegrass Album Band, the Rice Brothers and Rice, Rice, Hillman and Pedersen, is an unparalleled guitarist.

ABC - DIG - 21/11/2002: Peter Rowan Sneaks Into Town
His tour might be low-key but Peter Rowan’s talents deserve shouting about.
The tour was very low-key but not because of Rowan’s legend which, if anything, was enhanced by a superlative performance encompassing all facets of his music and songs from all eras of his career.
Since the 80’s Rowan has been recording and touring both solo and with his band so his concert brought a wealth of musical knowledge, a warmness of performance and some stunning compositions — both of Rowan’s and others.

Jelly review: Jerry Douglas and Peter Rowan
Rowan sings on all the songs but one, with just enough of a country catch in his voice to keep the down home feel.
The one song on which Rowan does not sing is "When You and I Were Young, Maggie," which Douglas performs as a beautiful solo.
The recording is remarkably fine, capturing the tone of the instruments and Rowan's voice exceptionally well.

It ignites a sense of discovery in both the historical context of Columbus' discovery of the new world seen through the eyes of a cabin boy, Pulcinella, and in the context of Peter's continued exploration of musical roots.

FAME Review: Yonder: Jerry Douglas & Peter Rowan
YONDER by Jerry Douglas and Peter Rowan is a living room album, in the highest and most literal senses.
The songs on the album are a mix of classics from Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family and others, and originals from Rowan's prolific pen.
Rowan says it all in the liner notes, quoting one of his mentors:

Sing Out! The Folk Song Magazine: Peter Rowan: Reggaebilly & The Rowan Brothers: Crazy People. - sound recording review
No matter which Rowan brother is taking the lead vocal--it is Peter on most of the songs--the others are there making this an album for lovers of tight, sibling harmony singing.
Crazy People reunites Peter with brothers Lorin and Chris for a mixed bag of mostly original material that is rooted in swing, traditional country and folk, bluegrass and TexMex music.
In Rowan's hands, the different musical worlds come together beautifully in a hypnotic fusion that's perhaps best exemplified by the glorious version of "The Cuckoo Bird," the traditional, minor key, Appalachian mountain song.

FAME Review: Bluegrass Boy: Peter Rowan
Peter Rowan's new CD is a must-hear for listeners seeking a new direction in which bluegrass music can steer in Monroe's wake.
Great vocal duets were one of the most memorable parts of the Monroe/Rowan version of the Bluegrass Boys, and Rowan brings this energy up another notch with the addition of the voice of Laurie Lewis on half of this CD's tracks.
This recording features Rowan playing mandolin and singing lead on a dozen original compositions.

I want to express my deep gratitude to my friend, Peter Rowan, who made this CD possible, to J.D. Crowe for his support and advice, to Fred Foster who has been a mentor over the years, and to all of these great musicians who brought the songs to life.

Peter Rowan has had as prolific a career in bluegrass as anyone not named Allison Kraus could possibly have - it's hard to believe that he's entering his fourth decade of his career since doing time with Bill Monroe in 1970.
Peter Rowan has often been quoted as saying he learned how to sing on Joe Vals' front porch.
Rowan was once a member of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys and he collaborated with Monroe on the title cut.

The Ark - Tony Rice & Peter Rowan
Peter Rowan has been one of the top songwriters in bluegrass since his days with Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys in the 1960s and Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's Old and in the Way in the 1970s.
Tony Rice and Peter Rowan are joined by Claire Lynch, a fabulous Alabama-based bluegrass songwriter with a new Rounder album on the way.
The Rounder label recently released You Were There for Me, a blockbuster collaboration between two musicians who are admired by progressive and traditional bluegrass fans alike.

The Scotsman - S2 Friday - Peter Rowan
WITH a career spanning more than 40 years, ornery country-folk legend Peter Rowan is perhaps the perfect choice to open Glasgow’s annual Americana festival, Big Big Country.
Rowan has the chops, but the true howling soul of bluegrass was missing.
He’s also something of an old hippie, as his waistcoat and jeans attire attest, while that Van-Morrison-in-a-Jon-Pertwee-fright-wig "look" reeks of a man whose imbibed many a tour bus doobie, as he admits in his rehearsed pre-ramble to Free Mexican Airforce, a catchy tall tale of desert excess.

 Peter Rowan: Blue Grass Boy
As a Blue Grass Boy: Peter Rowan, Bill Monroe's first lead singer to hail from outside the South, was a Blue Grass Boy for over two years.
Before and After: Since leaving the Blue Grass Boys, Peter Rowan has found success in a wide range of musical endeavors.
Although the personnel was relatively stable during Rowan's tenure, this lineup is relatively underrepresented on record; they did not record until late 1966, and then Monroe mostly sang duets with his son James.

 Amazon.com: Music: Yonder
There's a timeless, simple beauty to this collaboration between old friends: just Jerry Douglas on Dobro and guitar and Peter Rowan on vocals, mandolin, and guitar.
Rowan's singing and Douglas's incomparable slide work meld into a singluar, timeless marvel (the sound quality of this disk is astonishing, capturing the deep tones of the instrumentation as if they had been trapped in a time capsule and squeezed out note by note).
Rowan and Douglas dip back into the old-fashioned blues styles of the Jimmie Rodgers/Big Bill Broonzy era, sparsely arranged, plaintive material with a stripe of old-fashioned, turn-of-the-century, Gilded Age vaudevillian "pop" running through it.
