Peter Schreier (born July 29, 1935) is a German tenor and conductor.
Schreier was born in Meissen, Saxony, and spent his first years in the small village of Gauernitz, near Meissen, where his father was a teacher, cantor and organist.
Peter Schreier has lived in Dresden since 1945, in the district of Loschwitz on the right bank of the river Elbe.

At the age of eight Peter was entered in the preparatory class of the famous chorus the Dresdner Kreuzchor, to which he belonged for many years, and it helped to pave the way for his later musical career.
Peter Schreier sang primarily on East German recordings, many of which are re-released on CD on the Berlin Classics label, and for the Philips label.
Peter Schreier finished his singing career in December 2005, combining the roles of Evangelist and conductor in a performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) in Prague.

But the soloists in this recording are near perfect, the choir sections sing as ONE VOICE (none of this nonsense where you can hear individual primadonnas warbling away within the soprano section), the musicians are emotionally engaged in their music, and Schreier pulls everyone through a huge dynamic range, as is crucial for this piece.
I must take a deep and grateful bow to Schreier and all of his musicians.
In today's world of electronic manipulation, listeners don't always appreciate just how difficult it is to pull off this level of quality in a choral/orchestral performance, even with breaks between songs.
