Shore was not a supporter of Hugh Gaitskell but worked well with Harold Wilson once he had been elected as Leader, and was the main author of the Labour Party manifesto for the 1964 general election.
Shore served as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons for four years under Neil Kinnock but his influence with the leadership was negligible and he was not re-elected to the Shadow Cabinet in 1985.
Shore's eldest son Piers became addicted to heroin and died in a squat he was sharing with a girlfriend in 1977, a death which put a great strain on Shore.

Peter Walker, Baron Walker of Worcester, PC (born 1932), was Conservative MP for Worcester between March 1961 and April 1992, and the founder of the Tory Reform Group.
He was a close ally of Edward Heath, and refused to serve in Margaret Thatcher's Shadow Cabinet because he objected to her social and economic policies.
Peter Walker's political career survived and after retirement from politics he returned to the City as Chairman of Kleinwort Benson.
