Designer Potions: Snape Compare and Contrast   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Snape wrote almost twice as much as all the other students in his DADA exam, and his writing is also describes as being small and cramped - just like Hermione's (they're both trying to fit in as much as possible).
Peter joined the Death Eaters because he believed that he was joining the 'winning side'...
Snape finds himself in almost the same situation - when Sirius Black tells him to his face that he believes he is still very much working for the Death Eaters, and when Harry blames Snape to make himself feel better (in Dumbledore's office).

Peter had been given the exact image of where he was supposed to apparate, but it was very far underground and in those sorts of places, if you made a mistake… His stubby rat whiskers shivered.
Peter didn't like to admit that his apparating wasn't up to snuff, but James had often teased him about it… He forced himself not to think of James.
Peter waited for his back to be turned so he could pretend he had apparated.

 HPL: Timeline of Severus Snape
In an interview with Comic Relief (CR), JKR stated that Snape was "35 or 36." This interview took place after the release of GF, so assuming that she was referring to Snape's age at that point in the saga, which was Y15, Snape was born in Y15-35 (Y-20) or Y15-36 (Y-21).
Snape and the others took their OWLs, therefore, around Y16-21, or Y-5.These facts indicate a birth year for Snape--and therefore also for James, Lily, and the others of their year at Hogwarts--of (Y-5)-15, or Y-20.
Snape's role as a double-agent for the Order of the Phoenix may have begun at the same time he joined the Death Eaters, but it seems more likely to have happened after he overheard the Prophecy and before he was hired to teach at Hogwarts.

Before The Cock Crow   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Peter had sent the present for young Harry -- a plush dragon-toy, which was bewitched to breathe a red cloud when its tail was pulled -- and suggested, in the accompanying letter, that he'd love to come see James and Lily and their new son.
Peter nodded and began to say that it sounded perfectly all right, and that he'd been terribly curious as to what he and Remus were up to, and had he heard from James and Lily; but before he could get a single word out, Sirius called out a farewell and vanished from the fireplace.
Peter walked slowly toward the center of the room, where there was a long table covered with trays of hors d'oeuvres and vases of flowers.

He didn't know what Snape bathed with, or if it was a result of all those potions steaming up at him, or if it was just his natural scent and Peter's own nose sharpened from so many years as a rat, but Snape smelled insanely delicious.
Snape was incredibly tight, and hotter than fire, and Peter whimpered with frustration when he realized he wasn't going to make it.
It slipped out of Snape much easier than it had tried to go in, and it seemed to Peter to be the story of his life.

Snape arrives 6 minutes after Lupin (he also set off six minutes after Lupin so this fits with the time he entered the Willow) and his travelling time is also 18 minutes.
Fudge and Snape were probably with him but left at some point (I have guessed at 11:20, the time that Dumbledore starts talking to Snape and five minutes after they arrived at the Hospital wing).

 Obsession
Remus spotted his friends immediately upon entry of the library, as Sirius was looking as though he was about to climb up on the table, Peter was frantically hanging on to the older boy's robes, and James was tipped way back in his chair, trying very hard to laugh noiselessly.
Peter was often shy with his friends; he was not a naturally out-going boy, and by two years the youngest of the Marauders.
He really didn’t know why Sirius hated Snape quite so much, but he’d been ignoring it for awhile now, putting off the time when he was going to have to tell his compatriots that he had a new friend, a Slytherin.

And Peter probably clings to his marauder memories, b/c he seems like he never really had friends and it's probably one of his fondest memories (even though he did set up two of them).
Even after the true identity of a DE is known (at least to the inner circle), they still might be called by their code name out of habit.
I would imagine that Snape was the first to begin calling Pettigrew "Wormtail" - it's quite possible that he overheard it, with all the interaction he had with James and co. - and Voldemort picked it up.

Peter even managed to eat most of it, in between staring around the room to see who was here and who wasn't-- because anyone who skipped dinner today would be safe from the prank.
But Snape only spit his mouthful back in the cup, and glared down the table at Sirius, who was oblivious, regaling some second-years with a story that seemed to involve a great many swooping broomsticks and sudden explosions.
Peter recognized her after a second as Barty Crouch, the son of a high Ministry official, and couldn't help laughing again, slightly bitter this time: at Barty, at himself, at Voldemort, at the whole stupid war, he wasn't sure.

I know I've commented before how curious it is that Snape has been teaching at Hogwarts for 14 years, which would put his hiring around the time Lily and James died.
It's been mentioned many times of course that he has tried to get the DADA job, but I finally connected the dots that he first sought that job 14 years ago which means 14 years ago there was a vacancy for the job.
Snape may know his subject better then most, but teaching is more then knowing the subject and Snape is just an awful teacher, so yeah I too believe Dumbledore is only keeping him around because of what Snape has to offer in the fight against Voldemort.
