A tribute to Peter Tinniswood, whose death was announced on 9 January 2003.
Peter Tinniswood was one of Radio's finest and most imaginative writers.
Peter loved language; he loved yoking together the most improbable combinations of ideas and images, and he loved the simplicity of radio - his favourite medium.

Peter Tinniswood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peter Tinniswood ( December 21, 1936 - January 9, 2003) was an English radio and TV comedy scriptwriter, and author of a series of popular cricketing novels.
The short-lived ITV series Never Say Die (1970) drew upon Peter's days as a hospital porter, and was set in Victoria Memorial and focused on the comedy created between the patients and the staff.
In 1980 the BBC produced a series based on other Tinniswood books, featuring the character of The Brigadier, a cricketer, played by Robin Bailey.

Independent, The (London): Obituary: Peter Tinniswood
She and Tinniswood married in 1981, and much of his later work was written with her in mind.
Tinniswood's stage career had got off to a bad start in 1971, when The Investiture was slammed by Harold Hobson as the worst play he had ever seen.
Tinniswood himself talked of European absurd theatre as an influence, and he also translated the plays of Eduardo da Filippo - his version of Napoli Milionaria, transplanted from Naples to Liverpool, was staged at the National Theatre in 1991, directed by Richard Eyre, and starring Ian McKellen as the paterfamilias.

 Guardian | Peter Tinniswood
The author of the sketch was Peter Tinniswood, who has died of cancer at the age of 66, and who - just as well, perhaps - went on to write much grander, funnier, and more enduring comedy, in print, on stage and on the air.
Tinniswood followed up its success with two further novels, deploying the same extended northern family haunted by the lugubrious Uncle Mort, and kept more or less viable by the tireless, put-upon Carter Brandon.
Peter would be eventually as funny about his own.

The late Peter Tinniswood's first novel about the Brandon family is nothing like the BBC sitcom 'I Didn't Know You Cared' which was somewhat loosely based on it (by Tinniswood himself).
Tinniswood had a wonderful ear for dialogue, and a nice line in descriptive prose, but I'm not sure the Daniel business works, or what it's supposed to mean.
The Brandon series is Tinniswood at his finest, superb characters with brilliant dialogue, set against a backdrop of Northern Grime and Rugby league culture in the 60's.

Earlier this year, the novelist and playwright Peter Tinniswood, one of Radio Drama's best-loved and innovative practitioners, died after a long illness.

The series was written by Peter Tinniswood, formerly a writer on That Was The Week That Was, and drew on his novel A Touch of Daniel, which first introduced the Brandons.
Further books on the Brandons followed, as did other TV and radio comedies, of which The Home Front is fairly typical: another Northern family, more wry observations on the minutiae of everyday life, more pig-headed matriarchs and small-minded menfolk.

Peter Tinniswood's novels, A Touch of Daniel (1969), I Didn't Know You Cared (1973) and Except You're A Bird (1974), which introduced the Brandon family to the world, proved to be a rich vein of humour when filmed for the small screen.
Pardon?" seems forced and unnatural and the women are incredibly stoic and able to cut the men down to size with their logic, or their hymn singing, whilst the men seem to wallow in pessimism.

The musings are a mixture of whimsy, rant, comedy, and diatribe but with a slightly surreal sense.
At these moments it is difficult to tell if Tinniswood is being straight, ironic or subverting irony further - a good example of this is the first time Uncle Mort takes a sip from a pint of Southern Ale and begins a rant - these slightly surreal episodes only add to the pleasure.
The funny thing is, as surreal as the dialogue becomes sometimes, I clearly remember my grandma (Blackburn born and bread) saying almost identical things.
