Peter Vermes (born January 21, 1966 in Willingboro, New Jersey) is an American soccer player, who played for the US national team in the 1990 World Cup as a forward and later became one of the best defenders in Major League Soccer.
Vermes was drafted by the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in the third round of the MLS Inaugural Draft and captained the team in its first season.
Vermes was recognized as the MLS Defender of the Year, while his teammate Tony Meola won both the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and MLS MVP awards.

Another rather annoying part of the Vermes article is that he apparently thinks that the US U-20 kids have more skills than they'll ever need and are only in need of being taught team work.
I think my point is, whether he does or not, the quotes from Vermes would not generally encourage young attackers to take people on and I think it's important for us to do that with our young players since it appears to be an institutional weakness at the moment.
A kid who never passes is no good to you, but they're a lot rarer in the higher ranks of US youth soccer than the kids who play hot potato with it and they're not a whole lot of good to you either outside of defense maybe.
