The fame of Peter Vischer the Elder seems to have caused the tendency of over attribution to him versus his sons and even non-family members.
Hermann Vischer, the Elder came to Nuremberg as a worker in brass in 1453 and there became a "master" of his gild.
The tomb of the electoral prince Frederick the Wise in the Schlosskirche at Wittenberg (1521), previously thought to be by the Elder, is now thought to be by the Younger (Frederick the Wise's brother John the Steadfast was done by Hans Vischer at the same church).

A small portrait figure of Peter himself, introduced at one end of the base, is a marvel of clever realism: he has represented himself as a stout, bearded man, wearing a large leathern apron and holding some of the tools of his craft.
The two figures for the tomb of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor by Peter Vischer (King Arthur and Theodoric the Great), at Innsbruck Hofkirche, begun in 1521, are perhaps the most meritorious German work of this class in the 16th century, and show considerable Italian influence.

The South German schools at Nuremberg, Wurzburg, in Swabia, Bavaria, and the Tyrol, received something of an impulse from Italy, while the schools of the Middle and Lower Rhine, Saxony, Prussia, and the northern provinces were more closely connected with the art of the Netherlands.
Peter Vischer (146o—1529) was the foremost of the German bronze-casters.
This may have been due to the visit of Albrecht Durer to Venice, al-though of his own sons who became his assist-ants, it is certain that Hermann, and probably Peter Vischer the Younger, visited Italy.
