MERRILLVILLE, Ind. – U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Ind., announced today (Thursday, 1/10) that he is seeking $7 million in federal funding to place a high-tech business incubator in northwest Indiana modeled after a successful facility at the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette.
Visclosky is asking for $6 million in federal funding for construction and infrastructure costs for the high-tech incubator – to be called the Purdue Technology Center of Northwest Indiana –; and $1 million over four years for operating costs.
Visclosky already has secured $1.4 million toward this effort for the 2002 fiscal year.

Northwest Indiana officials are putting on a full-court press to have Gary's airport named the Chicago area's third airport over south suburban Peotone.
Gary Mayor Scott King, Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), U.S. Rep. Peter Visclosky (D-Ind.) and northwest Indiana civic and political leaders met in Washington, D.C., earlier this week to try to put together a lobbying effort.
The first goal is to obtain Federal Aviation Administration approval of a $750 million expansion plan that would enable the Gary airport to accommodate about 30 million passengers and 300,000 flights a year.

Additionally, local social service organizations will work together to provide productive alternatives for children who are at risk for drug abuse and gang violence, as well as develop programs to address the crisis of teen pregnancy.

In the latest setback to the government's largest construction project, a congressional subcommittee is calling for an investigation into a multibillion-dollar waste treatment plant at the Hanford nuclear reservation.
Paul Anderson, a spokesman for the Government Accountability Office, confirmed Tuesday that Ohio Republican Rep. David Hobson and Indiana Democratic Rep. Peter Visclosky — the chairman and ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee on energy and water — requested an audit of the project in a letter dated June 24.
Anderson declined to release additional details or the letter, as did spokesmen for the committee members.
