Charles, 3rd duke of Richmond (1733-1806), was one of the most remarkable men of the i8th century, being chiefly famous for his advanced views on the question of parliamentary reform.
Richmond died in December 1806, and, leaving no legitimate children, he was succeeded in the peerage by his nephew Charles, son of his brother, General Lord George Henry Lennox.

The Parish of Richmond is circumscribed by the parishes of Easby, Marske, and Hudswell, and the river Swale, and contains, in addition to the ground occupied by the town, 1,828 acres of grass land and 304 acres of woodlands.
Richmond was again devastated by the plague in 1597-8; and the country people afraid to bring their produce to the town, the market was held on the outskirts, on the spot now occupied by the barracks, and the shaft of the Market Cross still stands in the barracks yard.
When Richmond was summoned in 1304, and again in 1328, to send representatives, the burgesses claimed exemption by reason of the charters granted by the earls of Richmond, and confirmed by the kings of England.

The history of Richmond Castle is linked with that of the Honour of Richmond, a vast estate of land that stretched across eight counties and even included the Duchy of Brittany in France.
Richmond was then returned to the Duke of Brittany, and remained so until 1384 when the Honour of Richmond was granted by Richard II to his wife Anne of Bohemia, who died in 1394.

The title Earl of Richmond (Richemund from the original French) dates from shortly after the Norman Conquest (1066) and initially was honorary or stylistic in nature rather than legal.
Peter by contemporary chroniclers was referred to as the earl of Richmond although the title seems not to appear in any official documents.
From 1414 to 1435 the earldom was held by John Plantagenet, duke of Bedford and in 1452 was conferred on Edmund Tudor, brother to King Henry VI.
