Piet van de Kamp (December 26, 1901 – May 18, 1995), known as Peter van de Kamp in the United States, was a Dutch-American astronomer.
Piet van de Kamp, or Peter as he was called in America, arrived at the University of Virginia on March 1, 1923 from the Astronomical Laboratory of Groningen, the Netherlands for a year's residence.
Van de Kamp returned to McCormick on October 1, 1925 to take up the position left vacant by Harold Alden, who had just taken up the directorship of the Yale University Observatory Southern Station in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Van de Kamp was already well known in the field for his work in astrometry, the precise measurement of the positions of stars.
Van de Kamp performed the piano accompaniment for the films and composed tunes that he named after the stars he observed.
Peter Schickele, a member of the Class of 1957, composed "The Easy Goin' P.V.D.K. Ever-Lovin' Rag" for van de Kamp's 70th birthday, and in 1980 the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid for him.

In 1963, van der Kamp claimed that a giant planet, about 11 times the mass of Jupiter, was in a 24-year orbit around Barnard's Star,
In particular, Robert Harrington pointed out that all of the "wobbles" supposedly caused by van der Kamp's planets were of an identical form, suggesting a systematic instrumentation effect.
Though the planetary discoveries claimed by van der Kamp and his contemporaries at Sproul were all subsequently rejected, van der Kamp's optimism in general has been vindicated.

According to van de Kamp, a wobble in the movement of Barnard's Star was detected which he determined was the result of a body revolving around the star.
According to van de Kamp the reason for the changes in the physical parameters of the two planets had to do in part with the reference stars he was using when examining the photographic plates.
To his critics van de Kamp suggests that they (present researchers) spend the same amount of time with the same amount of plates and then, after that, he (van de Kamp) would be happy to talk with them.

For many years from 1963 onwards, a substantial number of astronomers accepted a claim by Peter van de Kamp that he had detected a perturbation in the proper motion of Barnard's star consistent with its having one or more planets comparable in mass with Jupiter.
When independent data were collected in the 1980s, this conclusion came to be disputed and the consensus is now that van de Kamp's claim was erroneous.
During the period that the claim was accorded credibility, it contributed to the star's fame among the science fiction community and the star's adoption as a target for Project Daedalus (The British Interplanetary Society's proposal for an interstellar space probe).

Van Maanen's Star has about seven-tenths of Sol's mass, but with only about 1.3 percent of of its diameter (Gatewood and Russell, 1974), and less than 2/10,000th of its brightness.
While a possible astrometric perturbation with a 20-year period was detected by Peter van de Kamp (1971), Gatewood and Russell (1974) were unable to confirm any periodic regularities in the orbital motion of Van Maanen's Star although a large scatter in the residuals of one coordinate may indicate the presence of a second body.

Later, Van de Kamp revised his analysis and asserted that Barnard’s Star had two smaller planets, with approximately 0.7 and 0.5 times the mass of Jupiter.
Since Van de Kamp’s first announcement, a number of other searches using a variety of methods have failed to confirm his results.  Ianna and Bartlett conducted an analysis of the substantial collection of photographic material relating to Barnard’s Star at the McCormick Observatory.
Van de Kamp worked at the McCormick Observatory before going to Swarthmore College as director of Sproul Observatory in 1937.

Over the next couple of decades van de Kamp refined his calculations so that, by 1982, he asserted that there were two planets in circular orbits around Barnard's Star with masses of 0.7 and 0.5 that of Jupiter.
Many astronomers tried to verify van de Kamp's work, only to find that there was either no wobble at all or a wobble caused by discrepancies in the methods used to produce the photographic plates.
Peter van de Kamp died in 1995 still standing by his beliefs.

In 1963, Peter van de Kamp, then director of Swarthmore College's Sproul Observatory, announced that, based on an analysis of its motion, Barnard's Star had an unseen companion.
Van de Kamp estimated that the companion was 50 percent heavier than Jupiter, much too small to be a star.
Van de Kamp still believes in his perturbations and his two-planet interpretation.

At Swarthmore he naturally came under the influence of Peter van de Kamp and Sara Lippincott of Sproul Observatory, and consequently was well-schooled in the classical techniques of photographic astrometry, including observing with the 60cm refractor, as well as measuring and reducing the results.
In 1962 Bob accompanied van de Kamp to a summer institute at Wesleyan University, where he performed the duties of a teaching assistant, and where he met W.H. Jeffreys, then a graduate student, who was soon to become Bob's thesis advisor.
Considerations on the stability of the solar system led Bob to collaborate with T.C. Van Flandern in studies of the dynamical evolution of its satellites, and to an eventual search for "Planet X", conjectured to lie beyond Pluto and to be responsible for small, unexplained, residuals in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune.

Luyten's thesis was based on 13,500 visual observations of variable stars, some of which he made in high school and others with the 6-inch refractor at the Leiden Observatory.
His Dutch predecessors--especially Kapteyn, van Rhijn, and his Danish mentor at Leiden, Ejnar Hertzsprung--picked up about where Sir William Herschel left off a century earlier in the study of the stellar makeup of the Milky Way.
On this he would cite a rule common to astronomers of his generation and all but forgotten since, that the systematic errors could be assumed to be about one-fifth of the accidental errors from all sources.

Until his death in 1995, Van de Kamp devoted most of his life (at at Sproul Observatory at (Swarthmore College) to analyzing over 2,000 plates of Barnard's Star that he and his students had taken from 1938 through 1981.
Some astronomers suspected that van de Kamp's data were distorted by the cleaning and remounting of the telescope lens at Sproul, 25 years after he began his observations.
In 2003, a team of astronomers reported on two and a half years of high-precision radial velocity observations of Barnard's star that set even stricter limits on any large planets in circular orbits around this small star (Kürster et al, 2003).
