Petermann Island is a 1km-long island rising up to approximately 150 metres above sea level.
There was (and is) food and water in the hut to last for at least fifty days, and the three scientists took up residence, while remaining in radio contact with their base, a mere 6 miles away, but impassible by ship or on foot due to poor ice conditions.
Petermann is the home to a study being conducted by the group Oceanities.

The Argentine Islands are a group of small islands off the West coast of Graham Land in Latitude 65*15* South and 64*16* West.
Fifty km on the North lies the Palmer Archipelago dominated by Anvers Island and to the South-West the snow-domed Biscoe Islands.
He revisited the Argentine Islands and spent the winter from February 3rd to November 26th 1909 in a bay on the East side of Petermann Island called Port Circumcision after the holy day on which it was first sighted (January first).

Petermann Island is a small island just off the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula of Antarctica, located at 65 deg 10 min S, 64 deg 10 min W, just a short distance south of Booth Island and the Lemaire Channel.
The island was discovered by a German expedition of 1873-74, who named it after geographer August Petermann.
Huts built by the expedition are gone, although a cairn remains, along with a refuge hut built by Argentina in 1955, and a cross commemorating three members of the British Antarctic Survey who died in a 1982 attempt to cross the sea ice from Faraday station to Petermann.

She retreated to the harbor at Petermann Island where efforts were made to repair the damage.
Prior to this charting, the island was said to be only eight miles in length but, as it turned out, it was actually over 70 miles long.

On November 23rd 1909, as the expedition prepares to leave Petermann, the hut is demolished and in its place Charcot said “we build a cairn, surmounted by a signal and supporting a large leaden tablet on which are engraved the names of those taking part in the Expedition”.
Subsequently, an exact replica of this plaque had been made and the intention was to site it on the same cairn as the original had been almost 100 years ago.
Charcot and his men had lived on Petermann Island for over nine months "...amid snow and fog, we have lived through the tiresome monotony of an almost continual gale, and have been through hardships and sufferings, but we have accomplished our task without quailing".

After lunch we are preparing to make a landing on Petermann Island.
At 2:40 AM we finally have passed the Antartic Circle 66d 33.7' We then continue south and anchor off Detaille island at 66d 52' It is cold and windy as we prepare to load the zodiacs This is about as bad as it can be and still launch.
It is cold and we find the island covered with snow and Adelie Penguins, also Fur Seals and one Wendel Seal on shore.
