More than a thousand years ago Petit Jean was the home of bluff dwelling Native Americans who lived as hunter-gatherers and hunted with spears and atlatls, and left petrographic images—pictographs and petroglyphs—as a record of their passing.

Legend of Petit Jean and French Exploration: The Legend of Petit Jean, and how the mountain received its name, begins in the 1700's with the story of a young French Nobleman, Chavet, who lived during the period of the French exploration of the New World.

The mountain was named, according to legend, for a French girl who disguised herself as a cabin boy in order to follow her fiance on an adventurous exploration to the "New World." After discovering the "mountain," the explorers stayed for the summer.
Just before the explorers were to return to Europe, Petit Jean ("Little John") became deathly ill, and asked to be taken back to the mountaintop for a last look at the river before she died...

When he filed his petition to acquire the land on this mountain top, he identified himself as John Walker of Petit Jean Mountain.

This month’s Petit Jean First Baptist Church member profile is on Mabel Brannon, who is affectionately know as Ms.
She worked while living in Conway as many of the people of her generation did, to support the war efforts of World War II in a bomb factory in Jacksonville, Arkansas.
They moved to Petit Jean Mountain in 1958 and raised two children; Phyllis, who resides in Little Rock and Lee, a resident of the Sardis community.

Mustangs will again return to the Museum of Automobiles on Petit Jean Mountain on Sunday for "Mustangs on the Mountain." This annual "Show and Shine" event will begin at 11 a.m.
The First Mustang show on Petit Jean Mountain was held Oct. 17, 1993.
It was hosted by all six of Arkansas' Mustang Car Clubs, and the highlight of the show was the first showing in Arkansas of the 30th anniversary 1994 Ford Mustang.

Though in places this corridor is confined to narrow gaps between mountains, west of Petit Jean the river has created a rich bottom land with numerous cutoffs, oxbows, backswamps, and natural terraces that make such a richly productive environment.
