Stonehedge Winery - Syrah v. Petite Sirah
Petite Sirah (also spelled as "Petite Syrah") is a fl grape varietal originating from the Rhone region of France.
Petite Sirah is a very late ripening grape with a thin skin and hence susceptible to the ravages of late season rains common in the Rhone region.
Petite Sirah is presently grown across California, but tends to do best in Mendocino, Napa Valley and in certain parts of Sonoma.

 Petite Sirah / Durif
It was long theorized this was the case, that Petite Sirah was the same as the lackluster French variety known as Durif, a cross of Peloursin, yet another unremarkable variety, with the true Syrah.
Although the nomenclature is similar and Petite Sirah is a true offspring of Syrah, the vines and grapes of parent and child are quite different and distinct from one another and these varieties should never be used synonymously.
Some vintners choose to spell it as "Petit Sirah", "Petite Syrah", or "Petit Syrah" and, although this is no doubt intended to provide some advantage in the marketplace, it merely serves to confuse consumers and defer their attention.

Durif - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is definitely one of the grapes known as the Petite Sirah variety which is extensively planted in California, although other analysis has shown that in vineyards with the most reliable planting records it may only be one of three distinct varieties known collectively as "Petite Sirah".
A DNA analysis conducted in 1997 suggests that this variety is likely a cross between Peloursin and Syrah.
Confirmed as recently as 1997, old plantings of Durif continued to be used to produce popular wine in the Rutherglen, Victoria region of Australia.

Syrah was thus eclipsed by its offspring, and after 1915, Sullivan noted, "We hear almost nothing of the real syrah in California." That absence was to last until 1959, when Christian Brothers planted a four-acre test block of syrah in the Napa Valley.
Because Petites are some of the longest-lived of California's red wines, smoothing out their tannins and taking on a mellowness with 10, 15 or 20 years in the cellar, they make a savvy choice as a gift for a child who will turn 21 a generation from now.

So far, California Syrah bottlings generally reflect the same characteristics based on climate as their French counterparts, with pronounced fl pepper, green olive and spice aromas appearing in wines from cooler regions and raspberry-red cherry and earthy notes in Syrahs from warmer regions.
So, let's recap: Syrah and Petite Sirah (or Petite Syrah) are not made from the same grape; and Shiraz is the same wine as Syrah, but with an Australian attitude.
The grapes for this Syrah came from the Schmidt Ranch Vineyard which, until the 1991 harvest, was the source for Sean Thackrey's celebrated "Orion" Syrah.
