Frank MARTIN - Petite Symphonie Concertante [TH]: Classical CD Reviews- Nov 2002 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
There is what I hope is an ongoing Martin series from Mathias Bamert on Chandos, though he opts for the orchestral version of the Petite Symphonie, well worth hearing but no way as ear-ticklingly provocative as the original.
So this release has the budget field to itself, and it’s good to be able to report that the performances really do the pieces justice.
Armin Jordan is an immensely experienced conductor, and his recording team have done him proud in letting the concertante instruments emerge naturally from the orchestra, being ‘featured’ but not jumping ridiculously from the speakers.

Rubbra's symphonies are straightforward in their musical language but always put development, melodic and polyphonic growth ahead of such niceties as orchestral color.
The symphony was premiered in 1889 and has much of Borodin's First in its first movement and a lovely andante which seems to demand choreography as well as a bustling scherzo and optimistic finale.
The symphonies, however, show Wirén concentratedly working a few motifs (the fourth is based on a single theme) in compositions of a fundamental gravity and austerity which have the quality of exquisitely shaped art.

Three not-quite mainstream works of widely diverse cultures that comprised last week's San Francisco Symphony program turned out to be not a hodgepodge but rewarding.
Even for a composer who seemed to have a basic aversion to humor, the Petite Symphonie concertante presents an exceptionally powerful example of sonic gloom.
As a nice touch for the Beethoven, Robertson had the strings sit in so-called Classical Seating: first violins to his left, seconds to his right, violas next to the seconds, cellos next to the firsts.

75 was composed in 1955 for William Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony and premiered by them December 2nd of that year.
Two instruments were constructed for the occasion: one called a "hisser"--a tank of carbon dioxide which produces sound by the release of a valve, the other a contraption filled with wooden balls set in motion by a rotating crank.
There are three movements to the symphony forming, according to the composer, "a ballistic curve with an initial impulse, a steady line, and then a decline." The symphony was well-received at its premiere, receiving a Pulitzer Prize in 1956, but apparently then fell out of favor.

FESTIVAL REVIEW: San Luis Obispo's Mozart and Beyond By Alan Rich (Clifton Swanson, July 18-19, 2002)
Martin's most-played work, at least in his lifetime, was the witty, charming Petite Symphonie Concertante of 1945; his most admired work currently among those few who keep his name alive at all is the oratorio Le vin herbé, a profound and intense setting of poetry about the Tristan and Isolde legend; it needs revival.
Under Swanson's strong direction the Mozart Symphony No. 32 in G minor, K. 318, went like the wind; the Eroica was similarly brisk and shapely but, as I was saying, my ears that night belonged to another performance.
Meanwhile, back at the Pass, Leila Josefowicz was reason enough to spend an evening at the Hollywood Bowl the night before SLO's opening concert; she had laid me low, along with all of London, with her performance of John Adams' Violin Concerto during his big weekend there last January.

This set deserves five stars for the quality of the works and the performances, but prospective buyers should know that these are all recordings from the 50s and 60s, and some concessions must be made for the quality of the sound, particularly for the Petite Symphonie Concertante, recorded in 1951.

As for the PSC itself, Jordan's interpretation is more sober and less dramatic than some; it lacks the venomous malice that older conductors have conveyed, and has a statuesque quality that I have ended up rather relishing, with attention paid to all sorts of string filigree that more violent performances overlook altogether.
The "Petite Symphonie Concertante" is the pick of the lot - nice to have Christiane Jacottet, who once recorded Martin's Harpsichord Concerto under the composer, as one of the soloists - : shrewdly paced and with exceptionally well-judged recording balance.
Some of the solo parts in the Concerto have been played with more assertive sense of character elsewhere, but the teamwork here is just fine, and again Jordan judges the "build" of the piece expertly.

Swiss, of French descent, Frank Martin (1890 - 1974) is primarily known for his "Petite Symphonie Concertante" for harp, harpsichord and two orchestras, and the oratorio "Golgotha", both composed within five years of the end of WWII.
Begun in 1922 and premiered in Hamburg in 1926, the "Mass" for double chorus elicits comparisons with the "Mass in G minor" of Martin's English contemporary, Ralph Vaughan Williams.
He had a certain attachment for the fifth hymn which he reserved for his funeral; as for the ninth chant, he quoted from it in the finale of his last symphony in 1936.

Young pianist Wang shows immense talent in early Beethoven piece
Wednesday's performance, in collaboration with guest conductor Charles Dutoit, was not Wang's first appearance in Davies Symphony Hall, but it was the first chance for most local concertgoers to hear what she can do in the standard repertoire.
Wang made her debut last year in the orchestra's Chinese New Year concert, and returned in September to perform Ravel's G-Major Concerto in a concert that wasn't open to the public.
The illness of principal keyboardist Robin Sutherland forced a late change in Wednesday's program, as Frank Martin's "Petite Symphonie concertante" was replaced by Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin." The suite from Richard Strauss' "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" occupied the second half as planned.
