A Petoskey stone is a rock that is composed of a (Click link for more info and facts about fossilized) fossilized (Marine colonial polyp characterized by a calcareous skeleton; masses in a variety of shapes often forming reefs) coral, Hexagonaria percarinata.
Petoskey stones are found in the Gravel Point Formation of the Traverse Group and were originally deposited during the (From 405 million to 345 million years ago; dominance of fishes and appearance of amphibians and ammonites) Devonian period.
When dry the stone resembles ordinary (A sedimentary rock consisting mainly of calcium that was deposited by the remains of marine animals) limestone but when wet or polished using (A skilled worker who cuts and engraves precious stones) lapidary techniques, the distinctive mottled pattern of the fossil emerges.

I start with a 100 grit wheel to get the imperfections out of the stone and then graduate through 4 more grits of belts to the final polish which is done by buffing with two different grits of polish.
