Petoskey is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan.
Petoskey and the surrounding area are notable for being the setting of several of the Nick Adams stories by Ernest Hemingway, who spent his childhood summers on nearby Walloon Lake, as well as for a high concentration of Petoskey stones, the state stone of Michigan.
Petoskey is on the southeast shore of the Little Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Bear River.

The city is situated between Lake Michigan and the western end of Lake Charlevoix, which drains into Lake Michigan through the short Round Lake/Pine River complex in the heart of downtown Charlevoix.
Michigan State Highway 66 has it northern terminus in the city and connects with Michigan State Highway 32 at East Jordan, about 12 miles to the southeast at the end of the south arm of Lake Charlevoix.
The state of Michigan purchased the track between Charlevoix and Petoskey, Michigan from the Chessie System Railroads and contracted Michigan Northern Railway to operate it.

Corrigan told the 7th Annual Joint Conference of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys/Public Corporation Law section on Mackinac Island recently that despite the state constitutional mandate that the high court justices be nominated by political parties, the real differences and debates within the court relate to philosophy.
She said textualism runs counter to the "dynamic" approach to interpretation, in which judges go behind the actual words of the statute and divine what they think are the true intentions of the Legislature.

Calling Petoskey "the most beautiful spot in Michigan," the director of the Michigan Department of Transportation on September 23 announced the agency would not build a 10-mile bypass through countryside around the city.
Township officials, and hundreds of Petoskey area farmers and residents worked for nearly a generation to convince the state to abandon its one-size-fits-all bypass proposal to move vehicles, and to embrace a plan that is more sensitive to the needs of people and their community.
Rosine called Petoskey "the most beautiful spot in Michigan," and added, "In the absence of a local consensus for a bypass around Petoskey, the Michigan Department of Transportation will recommend a 'no-build' alternative." Many of those in attendance cheered at the announcement.
