Burka first skated when she was six, having come to Canada with her parents two years earlier.
Coached by her mother, the former Dutch champion Ellen Burka, she became a superb figure skater and won the Canadian junior championships in 1961.
Burka was chosen Canadian woman athlete of the year in 1964 and 1965, and was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's outstanding athlete of the year, 1965.

While competing in the 1962 Canadian figure-skating championships at age 15, Burka became the first woman skater to complete the triple salchow jump in competition.
In 1964 she won the Canadian championships and placed 3rd in the Olympics and the world championships.

Petra Burka is a former World Champion Figure Skater and now coach.
She was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands on 17th November 1946 and came to Canada with her parents in 1951.
Since her retirement she took on coaching as well as being a commentator on figure skating events for CBC and CBS for Olympic, World, European and Canadian championships.

For example, although it's rather well-known that Kurt Browning performed the first-ever quadruple toe loop at the 1988 world championships in Budapest, perhaps you weren't aware that Petra Burka was the first woman in the world to perform a triple jump.
It was a salchow, by the way, and it came at the 1965 world championships.
