Taken from live performances in London in December, 2000 (but with nary a sound from the audience), you might think that since Colin Davis previously led an almost ideal recording of the work (released in 1969) this might be superfluous.
From Lang's very first utterance--"Les Grecs ont disparu!", spit out with venom--her obsessive nature, passion, and visionary position is clear, and she never lets up.
Her duet with Corebus in the person of the spectacular Peter Mattei (who, like Lang, sings rings around his counterpart in the earlier recording) is magnificent, her suicide as startling as it should be.

Would that Ariadne herself (the splendid-sounding German mezzo Petra Lang, seen last season at the Royal Opera as Tristan and Isolde's Brangane) could move as well as sing : her lament was blissfully doom-laden.
The perkiness of the male 'comics', evenly matched, more than made up; so did the orchestra, peppered in softer moments by Strauss's mutters of clarinet and deft whispers of paired flutes (a foretaste of Berg to come).

The cast here more or less replicated the one he favoured in his concert performances with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican three years ago: Ben Heppner was again Aeneas, Michelle DeYoung Dido, and Petra Lang Cassandra.
It was not perfect casting - the French diction sometimes left a bit to be desired - but it is hard to imagine assembling a much better line-up in one place at one time.
Heppner is pretty much unrivalled at the moment, endlessly ardent, wonderfully supple of tone and phrasing, while Lang delivers all her imprecations with a tone of unchallengeable authority and commitment.

There isn't quite the anguished anger one might expect in the Totenfeier opening-movement funeral march, needed to create more tension for later resolution; and not exactly the bitter-sweetness of an authentic Viennese laendler lilt in the second.

Certainly, this recent version, recorded in the wonderful Meyerson Hall in Dallas, makes it on grounds of sonic grandeur, and the performance is well shaped by Litton without the tempo and dynamic distortions some conductors seem to visit upon the work.
It's a fairly brisk reading, which I like, and the singers are excellent, though the Urlicht, beautifully sung by the unknown Petra Lang, seems a little overly languid in pace.
Getting back to the sonic grandeur, engineer John Eargle has captured the sound of singers and orchestra with remarkable faithfulness and naturalness.
