Petre Roman (born July 22, 1946) is a Romanian politician, former Prime Minister of Romania from 1989 to 1991, when his government was overthrown by the intervention of the miners led by Miron Cozma.
He is now leader of the Democratic Force party, which he founded after leaving the Democratic Party in 2003.
His father, Valter Roman (originally Ernö Neuländer, of Transylvanian Jewish descent) was a fervent Communist.

Romania's Democratic Party (PD) leader Petre Roman called for a new government to be formed on Thursday night and said that his party - the second largest in the governing coalition - would refuse to back a budget presented by current Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea, Romanian radio reported.
Roman said that the budget was "in every way connected with the reform" programme, and said that the PD would not vote in favour of the draft budget "if it is presented by current Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea".
Roman on Thursday rejected a statement by the senior coalition National Peasant Christian Democratic Party leader Ion Diaconescu, that the PD was out of the coalition for good.

In 1543 Petre was knighted and was appointed a secretary of state; in 1345 he was sent as ambassador to the emperor Charles V. A very politic man, he retained his position under Edward VI.
The Petres have been consistently attached to the Roman Catholic faith, William Joseph, the I3th baron (1847-1893), being a priest of the Roman church, and the barony is still (1911) in existence.
One of the 1st barons grandsons was William Petre (1602167 7), who translated the Fios sanctorum of Pedro de Ribadeneira as Lives of the Saints (St Omer, 1699; London, 1730).
