The most fertile soils within Petrified Forest National Park are generally found in the rolling grasslands, which are often located between mesas and badlands, as well as on a few of the mesa tops.
The park soils are derived from the bedrock and are composed primarily of silts, clays, and sands derived from the Chinle formation.
Park staffing levels and the size of the park are such that many areas of the park cannot be regularly patrolled to discover all the effects of erosion.

The area of Arizona now contained within the Petrified Forest National Park was once part of a large forest that extended from Texas into Utah - the trees were similar to modern-day conifers and existed at the same time as the dinosaurs, fossils of which are often found in the park.
The wood may be collected over a large area of east-central Arizona, but outside of the National Park, most of the best sites are privately owned.
Petrified wood was formed 225 million years ago during the triassic period and is 4 times as hard as granite and very colourful, due to the effect of impurities such as iron, manganese, copper and lithium present in the wood during the fossilising process.

Divided into two sections, connected by a half-mile wide strip of land, the Petrified Forest features the Painted Desert to the north, and a variety of ancient ruins, petroglyphs, and incredible deposits of fossilized wood to the south.

The park road turns due south, crosses the interstate and a branch of the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe railway, and passes through the petrified region.
However, the petrified logs are extremely beautiful with most unexpectedly bright colours, and the Park is adjacent to the scenic Painted Desert so it is well worth a visit especially as it is quite easily reached, being close to the main east-west route interstate 40.
It was this theft that prompted local citizens to petition for the creation of the then National Monument, which was established in 1906- National Park status was not achieved until 1962.

Western Interior Paleontological Society (WIPS) and the Petrified Forest National Park, I had the opportunity to do some fieldwork in the park in October 1992.
Although the park is most famous for its amazing deposits of petrified wood, especially the Arizona state fossil, Araucarioxylon arizonicum, it also contains fossils of a remarkably varied vertebrate fauna, including remains of large amphibians, many types of thecodont reptiles, a variety of fish, and some of the earliest dinosaurs.
