'Petrissage', or kneading, consists of pressing and rolling the muscles under the fingers and hands.
Petrissage has been said to increase the local blood supply and increase venous and lymphatic return.
Petrissage has shown to decrease neuromuscular excitability, but only during the duration of the massage, and the effects are confined to the muscle(s) being massaged (Starkey, 1993).

Petrissage comes from the French verb "petir" meaning "to knead" requires that soft tissue be lifted, rolled and squeezed by the massage therapist.
Petrissage has the mechanical effect of softening and creating space around the actual muscle fibres and making the tendons more pliable as well.
Petrissage under these conditions may be uncomfortable for the client and it may be best to switch to effleurage and compression which may soften tissue enough so that pertrissage can be used more effectively.
