Petroleum (from Latin petrus – rock and oleum – oil), mineral oil, or crude oil, sometimes colloquially called fl gold, is a thick, dark brown or greenish flammable liquid, which exists in the upper strata of some areas of the Earth's crust.
Some would argue that because the total amount of petroleum is finite, the dire predictions of the 1970s have merely been postponed.
Petroleum's worth as a portable, dense energy source powering the vast majority of vehicles and as the base of many industrial chemicals makes it one of the world's most important commodities.

These conflicts will determine how the ownership of petroleum and the regulation of its extraction and use will be transformed by the entrance of the "commoners" into a field dominated for over a century by nation states and global corporations.
In order for the petroleum industry to operate on a capitalist basis, the large international oil companies and main imperialist powers at the end of World War I (US, Britain, France) tore up the Ottoman Caliphate and created a number of rentier states that were largely under their control.
The proponents of this notion argue that the consequences of the exploration, extraction, distribution, and consumption of petroleum are so problematic for "humanity" that they cannot be left to the devices of private companies or nation states, but have to be managed by international organizations.

Editor's Introduction to Petroleum Oil Fire Disasters in Urhoboland, 1998-1999.
It seems quite clear now that the age of the oil pipelines is the main culprit, often assisted by sophisticated vandalization through the use of rare equipment which is only available to powerful and privileged men from within the ranks of those who work for the oil companies or the Federal Government of Nigeria.
It is striking that less attention is being paid to these later instances of fire disasters than those that occurred in 1998 and 1999.
Sadly, the indifference of the government of Nigeria to the victims of these fire disasters, which its own actions have caused, is as cold today as it was during the years of ugly military rule in 1998 and 1999.
